The Woods of Legends

A trail rich in heritage, featuring traditional pottery, Ratilly Castle – a former water tower now converted into an observatory and exhibition centre – and, of course, the sunken paths lined with hedges.

Description of the walk

Start from the Champ de Foire (motorhome site).
(S) Facing the cemetery, head to the left. Cross Rue du Petit Pont and, of the two paths, take the one on the right. Follow this until the next junction.

(1) Carry straight on, ignoring the signpost for the Sentier de Guédelon No. 23. At the Y-junction, turn right and, at the next junction, keep right again. When you reach a cross-path, turn right.
Leave this path and turn left onto a tarmac road.

(2) Cross with care and walk up the street opposite. At the end, turn left, then, facing the water tower, take a well-maintained path on the right. Walk straight down to reach a cross-path. Take the path on the left. You’ll reach a road.

(3) Cross the road, heading left for a few metres, then right. A small dirt track lined with pollarded trees leads to Les Perriers, crossing a small road.
Walk through the village heading north; the street then ends in a dirt track.

(4) Follow it to the junction with another road (Rue des Perriers). Take the road opposite for 200m and cross the D66.

(5) Cross this road with care. The dirt track continues on its way through Les Gâtines.

(6) Ignore the two paths and head straight ahead and to the left at the top of the hill.

Signs on posts: “Route de l’eau et des bois No. 24”
(7) Walk straight on through the hamlet of La Guénerie.
Leave the Crot Maçon on your left. Continue straight on until you reach a forest track. Follow this track as it climbs gently along a wide stretch.

(8) At the end of this track, head down to the left. The road is quite shaded; on either side, you’ll pass Les Pautrats, Bourg sans Paille and Les Martins. Then, on your right, you’ll see Ratilly Castle.

(9) Continue along the road until you reach the hamlet of Les Jolivots.

(10) At La Croix, take Rue de la Déplaisance on the left, which leads back to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

This path is very pleasant, but do make sure you wear sturdy shoes, as some sections can get muddy in wet weather.
You can take some lovely photos all along the route.
Take care when crossing roads.
At (9), if the gate is open, you can take the path on the right to walk around Ratilly Castle.

Worth a visit

Places to visit in Treigny:
The various pottery exhibitions, the old water tower, Ratilly Castle and, of course, the ‘cathedral’ of Puisaye – a 15th-century church featuring its Jansenist Christ.
Nearby, if you’ve still got some energy left, why not try the tree-top adventure course in the Bois de la Folie or, for something more relaxing, a visit to Boutissaint Wildlife Park? These two sites are very close to one another.

A lovely walk in complete tranquillity. It is indeed quite wooded (we went for a walk on 3 September when it was over 30°). If it’s hot, don’t underestimate the sections through the fields (there’s nowhere to shelter from the sun between points 2, 3 and 4). And there are no water sources, so make sure you bring plenty of water.

This route is ideal in hot weather as it passes through a lot of woodland.

A very pleasant walk. We had a bit of trouble getting started because of the two cemeteries in Treigny. A lovely route. Make sure you don’t miss Ratilly Castle – you walk past the back of it and it isn’t signposted.
