La Marlée wash house, orientation board and source of the Loing

From the hilltop village of Perreuse (in the commune of Treigny), this walk will have you dreaming of the Atlantic or the English Channel. The waters of the two springs on this route, though so close to one another, will only mix once they reach the ocean!

Description of the walk

Start from Rue de la Chaume in the village of Perreuse (municipality of Treigny-Perreuse-Sainte-Colombe).

(S/E) Head due north along the street that runs alongside the fields. Then, at the junction with the road, take the path opposite that leads down to the Marlée wash house.

(1) Continue west-north-west. At the first path, after about 1 km, turn right to climb towards the hamlet of Les Gourleaux.

(2) Before the hamlet, at the top of the hill, take the small path on the right which leads to Les Devaux. When you reach the tarmac road, turn right onto the main road. Continue along this small road, passing the few houses on your right.

(3) Before the sharp bend in the road, take the path on the left. This leads to a right-angled bend in the road.

(4) Take this road on the left and head downhill to reach the first house on the right (a farm).

(5) Take the stone path opposite and walk on until you reach the Croix Saint-Nicolas at the next crossroads.

(6) Turn right; the path leads to a road junction.

(7) Head down the tarmac road to the right, towards “Perreuse-Source du Loing”.

(8) After stopping at this spring, the route of which is marked on a stone monument, continue along this tarmac road.

(9) Turn slightly left, staying on the road.

(10) Head left to reach the orientation table.

(11) After taking in the view from the table, head down to the left and take the path on the left for just a few metres. Turn right onto the path running parallel to the road. Continue to the entrance to the village of Perreuse. Turn left into Rue des Crôts to reach Le Sully (a remarkable lime tree).

(12) Head downhill to the left and return to the starting point by turning right onto Rue de la Chaume (S/E).

Notes

Please ignore any signposting you encounter on this route. It relates to other trails described on this website.
The paths vary greatly. In bright sunshine, you’ll frequently move from full sunlight into the shade. There are springs, but no drinking water!
At the crossing point (5), you can take a short detour to the Fontaine des Guittons (approx. 500m round trip). It is from this point that the Loing resumes its course. Between its official source and this fountain, this tributary of the Yonne plays hide-and-seek: sometimes in the open air, sometimes underground.

Worth a visit

Do visit the inner streets of the village of Perreuse.
From the starting point, the horizon offers beautiful views of the landscape: the Loire, the hills of Forterre and the forests of Puisaye. From the orientation table at number 11, there are stunning views of the Loire and the Morvan.

Getting back into the swing of things after lockdown. The pheasants were surprised to see a human!
A very pleasant, mostly shaded walk.
The Marlée wash house is particularly interesting. I was surprised to learn that it was still in use in the 20th century.
The little-used path between Les Gourleaux and Les Devaux is overgrown with grass but remains very easy to walk.
Return to Péreuse on a tarmac road, but with very little traffic.
It was a real pleasure to follow this route

Hello
Route taken on 5 October 2019
Good description (my computer won’t print the maps) which allowed me to complete the route without getting lost
A pleasant, varied walk
Interesting to see the source of the Loing (a shame that the Loing farm, which is right next door, is unoccupied and falling into disrepair)
Thank you for this route

What a lovely walk! I was born 64 years ago, just 5 km from the source of the Loing, and I’d never been there!
Thanks, Gérard!

A walk along the beautiful paths of the Puisaye region...
That magnificent wash house at La Marlée, as always!!!!!
Not to be missed...
A slight error in the description between point 2 and point 3
After the sharp bend in the road
you must take the left-hand path....
If you turn right, you’ll end up at La Charmée.
