Tour of the Vallon de la Fauge via the icefall

This snowshoe hike will take you to a pretty, unspoilt valley away from the ski resort.

The icing on the cake is a superb ice waterfall in the middle of the forest, creating a magical atmosphere.

Description of the walk

From Villard-de-Lans, drive up to Les Clots and park in the large car park at the entrance to the hamlet on the left.

(S/E) At the end of the car park, take theGR® trail that climbs to the left towards La Fauge and Col Vert.
Pass a small pass at the intersection with a ski slope and enter the forest.
After a short hairpin descent, you will reach an intersection at a signpost indicating La Fauge (1,240 m).

(1) Leave theGR® and continue on the right towards Abri de la Fauge on a wide path that gradually climbs up the valley. Continue in this direction until you reach a more open area near Abri de la Fauge.

(2) Continue on the left towards Col Vert, skirting a field until you reach Bergerie de la Fauge.

(3) Descend straight ahead towards Col Vert in a wide valley, then turn left and walk along the side of the mountain below the forest.
Gradually climb to reach the edge of the forest. Once in the forest, the slope becomes steeper and some sections require particular caution.
After a hairpin bend to the right, descend slightly into a valley and climb up on the left to reach an intersection at the Roybon marker (1,425 m), just below the Roybon hut.

(4) Join theGR® and descend on the left towards La Fauge and Les Touvières. At the next intersection, keep left to descend through the forest. This section is the most exposed to the sun and may sometimes lack snow depending on snow conditions.
Descend this path to Touvières (1,235 m).

(5) Continue straight ahead towards the Pont de l'Amour, which you will reach quickly.

(6) Cross the bridge and climb up the valley on the left, on the other side of the stream. Before the path climbs away from the stream, turn left to reach the Cascade la Fauge, which turns into a magnificent icefall in winter.

(7) Retrace your steps tothe GR® and climb up to the left along a steep path that rejoins the Fauge intersection (1240 m) at the start of the hike.

(1) Head up to the right and follow the route in reverse from the start of the hike to return to the Clots car park (S/E).

Notes

This snowshoe hike does not present any particular difficulties, except for a few slightly steep sections on the climb towards the Roybon Hut between (3) and (4).

However, the distance and elevation gain should be taken into account as progress is more difficult than when hiking on foot.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

Very beautiful hike. Beautiful views. Thank you to "Visorandonneur".
Hike done in fresh but well-packed snow with crampons.
Please note that in winter, the road from Villard is closed for the last 3 kilometres uphill, but you can take the Route de la Cote 2000 and then Les Glovettes.
The Clots car park fills up quickly, but you can park further away along the road.

A beautiful circular hike on a beautiful January day. It had snowed the day before, which made the scenery even more magical. The trail is very well marked and can be done with children. The Roybon hut was a welcome place to eat in the warmth and shelter, which is why I chose this route. It is a very popular hike. But when it's beautiful, it's normal and easy to access, and can be done with children. Thank you, Visorando, for this beautiful route.
The more adventurous can climb up to the Col Vert.

A very beautiful short snowshoe hike, but the return trip via the waterfall is a bit long!

A lovely walk, really easy, with beautiful views of the Vercors mountains above. The frozen waterfall was magnificent. A very pleasant walk.
However, we did it on a sunny Sunday between Christmas and New Year's Day, so there were lots and lots of people...
