Walk around Schluch Lake (Schluchsee)

Lake Schluch is the largest lake in the Black Forest, in Germany. It is a pleasant walk around the lake at any time of year. Most of this walk follows a fairly shaded path along the lakeshore.

Description of the walk

To get to Schluchsee:
- by train from Freiburg im Breisgau to Schluchsee.
- by road: from Freiburg im Breisgau to Schluchsee, via Titisee.
In the village of Schluchsee, there are several car parks available not far from the centre and the station.

(S/E) From the station, follow the path along the lake towards the south-east until you reach a water park (Aquafun).

(1) Then turn left onto the small road that crosses the railway line and head northwards until you reach an underpass.

(2) Go through the underpass beneath Freiburger Straße to reach a large car park. Walk to the far end of the car park, then turn right to reach the entrance to a primary school (Grundschule).

(3) At the end of the car park, near the school, follow the sign on the right (south-east) leading onto a pleasant forest path. You’ll come out onto another path; follow it to the right. Stay on this main path, heading south-south-east, and ignore any side paths. You’ll eventually reach Freiburger Straße (B500).

(4) Cross the road and continue south for about a hundred metres. Then take the footbridge leading to the Hotel Hubertus.

(5) Follow the Seerundweg (Lake Circuit Path) and walk along the lake on your right. Pass the Seebrugg terminus station and continue until you reach a youth hostel.

(6) Then turn right, leaving the youth hostel on your left. This will take you onto the B500 (signposted Seerundweg).

(7) Turn right towards the lake. Follow the footpath/cycle path running parallel to the B500. Walk along the lake to the dam.

(8) Turn right and cross the dam to the other side of the lake.

(9) At the end of the dam (Staumauer), follow the Seerundweg all the way along the right-hand bank of the lake, ignoring all turn-offs to the left. This will take you to the western end of the lake.

(10) Cross the small bridge (Muchenländer Brücke), then continue along the left bank of the lake until you reach another bridge.

(11) Cross the Windgefallbach via a small footbridge and stay by the lake. Pass the hamlet of Aha and head towards a headland jutting out into the lake.

(12) Keep following the lake as closely as possible until you reach the railway line.

(13) Continue along the path between the lake and the railway line to return to Schluhsee station (S/E).

Avoid car parks that give you 8 euros in change and no shops that give you change
Leave the city and you'll find free parking

Hello, the question is indeed a bit confusing, especially as when I did this walk (at the beginning of May 2019), the boats were not yet in service.
First of all, it would be good to know how many km your husband could walk, given that the route is almost flat apart from two or three footbridges with steps.
However, looking at the map and the landing points indicated, I would suggest that you
start at the point indicated (S/E) and do the tour in the opposite direction, i.e. go to the points (13), (12), (11), (10) then head for the point (9) stopping at the Unterkrummenhof landing stage, take the boat and return to the point (1) in the village of Schluchsee.
It's about a 9 km walk.

Hi there,
I'd like to do part of this walk, as my husband has reduced mobility (ortho shoes).
Where would you advise me to start and at what point should I take the boat to return to the starting point?
My question is a bit convoluted, but as I don't know the route at all ... thank you in advance for your advice!
for your advice!

Easy tour of the lake, plenty of opportunities to cool off, circuit can be shortened by taking part of it by boat, and there are plenty of places to eat.

This is a very pleasant walk that I do fairly regularly. It's worth noting that, as you're staying on the edge of the lake, there are very few ascents and descents.
You can add to this that from May to October, a boat travels on the lake and stops at various points. So if you find the whole tour too difficult, you can do part of it and take the boat for the rest.
And don't forget that there's a farmhouse inn in the middle of the route, which is very pleasant in any season.
