Gorge Trail Stage 4 – from Fischbach to St. Blasien

The Schluchtensteig trail leads in six stages over 119 km from Stühlingen to Wehr across the southern Black Forest.
The fourth stage of the Schluchtensteig is almost completely free of gorges and therefore quite easy to walk. However, you should not underestimate the altitude difference, especially after Unterkrummenhof, where a long climb awaits hikers, and after St. Blasien, where the forest road descends for a long time and is quite steep in places.
The southern Black Forest with its isolated farms shows its charming side on this stage, offering frequent views of the Alps. At the end, you can enjoy the Windeck waterfalls above St. Blasien.
Thanks to good bus connections, this stage can also be hiked very well as a single stage.

Description of the walk

To get to the starting point, take bus 7257 from Lenzkirch or Schluchsee Rathaus. There is ample parking in Lenzkirch and Schluchsee. Alternatively, you can park directly in Fischbach near the bus stop. Departure from St. Blasien is by bus 7319 to Seebrugg and from there by bus 7257 to Fischbach, Lenzkirch or Schluchsee or by the S1 to Schluchsee station.

(S) From the bus stop, walk a short distance uphill along the road and take the first left. Pass the guest house and continue uphill on the paved road in an S-bend. Behind the pond, keep left and continue to a raised hide.

(1) Here, keep left and follow the gravel path. The path now descends slightly. At the next intersection, continue straight ahead until you reach the next intersection with a signpost.

(2) Take the path straight ahead up the hill – the path is only visible once you reach the signpost.

(3) To the right, we can make a detour to the summit of the Bilstein. There are a few steps up over rocks. Then back to the fork and follow the path sharply to the right downhill. We follow the signs for the Schluchtensteig trail, which initially takes us down a beautiful narrow path through the forest, partly in serpentines. Then the path widens, we pass under the railway line, the nature camp and the Seglerhof.

(4) There are a few steps down, then we cross under the road, cross the cycle path and turn right onto a narrow path that leads us along the shore of the Schluchsee. We keep close to the water at all times.

(5) We reach toilets, turn right onto the forest path and immediately follow it to the left. Here, too, we keep close to the shore, take the left path at the junctions and reach the Unterkrummenhof.

(6) Our path leads us uphill in front of the building on the gravel forest road. At the first fork, we hike sharply left and continue uphill until we reach a stone signpost.

(7) We continue uphill, keeping to the left and crossing the Krummenbach stream.

(8) Then we turn right, the path makes a 180-degree turn and we reach a crossroads with a table and benches.

(9) Continue straight ahead, keeping to the forest path uphill to the highest point of the stage and the Schluchtensteig trail.

(10) At the Krummenkreuzhütte, we are at an altitude of 1,154 metres . Leave the hut on your left and continue straight ahead on the Hubertusweg. At the end of the clearing, follow the forest path to the right and you are now on the Muchenländer Weg. The trail now descends, and we keep to the left in a curve and reach the hamlet of Muchenland. We follow the sign to the right and reach a confusing double T-junction, which we cross diagonally – first 90 degrees to the right, then 90 degrees to the left.

(11) At the rest area, follow the signs for the Schluchtensteig trail, which leads downhill on Wittemleweg towards St. Blasien. Keep right at the first fork, then take a sharp left at the second fork and you are now on Pfaffenbrünnleweg. At the end of a small clearing, continue straight ahead, back through the forest, then briefly along the edge of the forest and downhill across the southern Black Forest heights to Althütte. At the first crossroads, turn right, then continue straight ahead to a rest area.

(12) Shortly afterwards, turn left and keep right at the next fork, go straight ahead at the next crossroads downhill on the Alten Blasiwalder Weg and ignore all turnings for the time being.

(13) You will reach a crossroads. Take the right-hand path straight ahead and continue to follow the Schluchtensteig sign downhill.

(14) Shortly after the Windberghütte, we reach a T-junction, where we turn left downhill until we reach a bench shortly afterwards.

(15) Here, we turn off towards the Windberg waterfalls and take the narrow path sharply to the left, which we follow downhill through the Windberg gorge.

(16) At the Albsteig Schwarzwald junction, our path leads us to the right out of the forest. We reach St. Blasien and follow Friedrichstraße to the right downhill. Then we continue on the main road parallel to the Alb river towards the cathedral. At the first opportunity, we cross the Alb and reach Fürstabt-Gerbert-Straße, which we follow or take the footpath across the cathedral square. Cross another stream, turn right onto Tusculumweg and you will reach your destination, the tourist information office in St. Blasien (E).

To get to the bus station, stay on Fürstabt-Gerbert-Straße until you reach the intersection, then turn left onto Todtmooser Straße, cross the bypass at the traffic lights, keep right and you will reach the bus station after a few metres. There are also public toilets here.
Return from St. Blasien by bus 7319 to Seebrugg and from there with the S1 to Schluchsee railway station.
