Notes

The route suggested here consists of four stages, but it is preferable to split it into five stages to allow time to enjoy the Méouge Gorges during the first stage (you can stay overnight at the Ferme de l’Ubac, just before Barret-sur-Méouge, or at the Auberge de Barret).

The circular stage from Izon-la-Bruisse is, of course, optional… but as it would be a shame, if you have the time, not to climb the extraordinary ridges of the Montagne de Chamouse!

If you’re a keen walker and don’t have much time, it’s even possible to complete this circular tour of the Méouge in three days:
1 / Antonaves – Izon-la-Bruisse.
2 / Izon-la-Bruisse – Les Damias.
3 / Les Damias – Antonaves.

The difficulty of the route lies in the length of the stages, but apart from a few very straightforward sections in the Méouge Gorges and on the Crêtes de Chabre, the paths and tracks are very accessible.

The three accommodation options along the route are all genuinely committed to sustainability and offer comfortable and unique stays: the Ferme de l’Ubac in Barret-sur-Méouge, Izon Nature in Izon-la-Bruisse, and Les Damias in Eourres.

Worth a visit

The strength of this route lies in the wide variety of atmospheres and landscapes it offers throughout the journey, alongside exceptional panoramic views of the Southern Alps and the Provençal mountains.

A really lovely 5-day hike – I’d recommend splitting the first stage in two as it’s quite long, especially if it’s hot.
Magnificent views, not many people about.
The recommended accommodation is very good.

We walked around the Méouge over four days, during the week of 8 May 2024, following a combination of the GRP route and the route described in this Visorando guide. This route is absolutely brilliant – we thoroughly enjoyed it!
On Day 1, we walked from Antonnave to Barret-sur-Méouge (3 hours 30 minutes following the GRP route). Day 2: Barret to Izon (GRP) + Montagne Chamouse (8 hours 30 minutes). Day 3: Izon to Les Damias (6 hours following the Visorando guide). Day 4: Les Damias to Antonnave via Pic St Cyr (5 hours 15 minutes following the Visorando guide).
The scenery is magnificent, particularly along the ridges (before Izon and before Pic St Cyr), which offer views of the Alps stretching as far as the eye can see, and even Mont Ventoux!

A superb route that’s definitely worth doing. It’s only busy in the Méouge Gorges; otherwise, it’s completely unspoilt!
It’s true that the section from Barret-sur-Méouge to Izon-la-Bruisse is physically demanding: the path runs along the ridge for quite a long stretch and at times you find yourself thinking it’s just as well there’s no wind!
The welcome at the lodges is brilliant. I’ve got a soft spot for the secluded lodge in Izon-la-Bruisse!
