The Gorges of the Méouge

A walk through gorges is always pleasant, and in those of Méouge it's a real joy.

Description of the walk

In Laragne, take the Ribiers road, then turn right in the direction of Châteauneuf-de-Chabre; there, turn right in the direction of the Gorges de la Méouge. Park in the large car park of the Roman bridge (S).

Descend on the GRP with JR route markets (Jaune Rouge - Yellow Red), cross the bridge (1) to then follow a series of climbs/descents remaining on the GR. The numerous markers will guide you to an intersection of paths.

There, turn right (2) on the descending GR (yellow markers). Cross the small river before joining the Route Saint-Pierre-Avez (3).

Turn right staying on the road. Cross the Méouge over the bridge, turning right after 200m before turning left on the PR (4) which via Côte Chaude joins a forest track (5) then a road that you follow, and finally the village of Pomet (6).

Remain on the road until you get back to the car park.

Notes

Water-filling points are rare, and there is one spring that comes out of the ground just after a small stream after Côte Chaude. There is also a fountain in Pomet but it seems that the water isn't good at the moment.

Worth a visit

A fantastic circuit in the Mediterranean countryside. This up-and-down circuit requires careful attention in places. Effectively, one path has eroded and a short detour is needed, particularly for people who suffer from vertigo. This detour of a few dozen metres is completely safe.
If you're lucky you might see hang-gliders landing the landing area close to the path. These take off from the opposite summit, the Montagne de Chabre.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

Very beautiful first part of the hike to points 1 and 2. Then you find yourself on the return route, which is on the other side of the Meouge, quite slippery in autumn, and ends with the Pomet road back to the starting point. Several kilometres of tarmac road, tedious and uninteresting.
We will do this hike again and look for a return route on the same side of the Meouge to avoid the road.

Just one tip: adapt the direction of the route to the season (if it is hot, set off in the morning and go in the opposite direction to the one suggested)

Hello and thank you for your latest message. It's a shame you didn't find the ford. I've also noted the deterioration of certain sections, which must have happened between the time of your hike and that of "Fofi74".

Circuit not completed because the ford was never found along the route.
Some sections were very damaged.
It's disappointing, we ended our hike on the plains circuit.
Luckily, the view of the Meouges Gorges was pleasant at the start of the route

A very beautiful hike, with magnificent views in the first part. The second part is less interesting but allows you to return by completing a loop. You can also start from point 3, saving the most beautiful part for last.
There are no technical difficulties, except for the length and the heat. Remember to take plenty of water!
Please note that in summer, you cannot park in the gorges. You have to park in Antonaves and follow the "NAVETTE" signs. There is a shuttle service that takes you to the start of the hike in 5 minutes for £5 per person return. Shuttles run every 10 minutes.

Very beautiful hike. Magnificent landscapes. Beautiful pools right from the start of the trail. Halfway along the trail, you can dip your feet in the water, which is always nice when it's very hot.
The last part isn't very pleasant (about 2 kilometres) on a forest road, which is certainly quiet but often in the sun...

We took the walk in the opposite direction because of the heat...so this part wasn't very interesting. The only highlight of this hike (at this time of year) is the section along the Méouge, which is superb with beautiful pools. Best to do earlier in the season.

Hello
Thank you for your comment, but I'd like to know how you got 17 km instead of 12 in order to change the km calculated by the application.
Thank you for your reply.

Super topo but be careful about the GR or PR markings as they are not always obvious.

The walk was marked as easy and was 11.86 km long. We walked for 8 hours and covered more than 17.31km, even though we took a shortcut via a footbridge over the Méouge! The terrain was unreliable, with lots of rocky scree and difficult access for the first part up to the car park between the two roads! We had to hold on to a rope left there by other users to avoid falling. The usual rope had been broken by the scree. There was no indication of this type of difficulty in the description, even without the scree. Medium difficulty should not require climbing and the safety equipment used in the mountains. A long section on a tarmac road for 1/2 of the way back! The length, danger and difficulty are not suitable for a family with children. This is not a hike for semi-beginners, but for experienced, well-equipped people. What's more, I have to say that, given the heat, we set off very early but, as we hadn't planned to walk for 8 hours, we ran out of drinks (3 litres per person, though). The first part of this tour is always sunny. In summer, the heat is just as oppressive in the second part. We couldn't wait to get away from the gliders because it was unbearable and we couldn't take it any more! The classification and distances of this hike need to be reviewed. Thanks in advance.
