From Antonaves to Izon-la-Bruisse via the Méouge Gorges

The first stage of the Tour de la Méouge gets off to a beautiful start with a complete crossing of the Gorges de la Méouge. It then passes through Barret-sur-Méouge before reaching the Crête de Chabre for a splendid panorama of the Dévoluy, the Écrins and the Ventoux. Then you arrive at the remote hamlet of Izon-la-Bruisse with its spectacular view. It is possible to split the stage in two (recommended in case of high temperatures or bad weather and depending on the level of the participants) by spending the night at the Ferme de l'Ubac, before Barret-sur-Méouge.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Tour de la Méouge dans les Baronnies Provençales

Notes

If you are carrying a rucksack and walking at a moderate pace, allow a good 8 hours of actual walking time.

To split the stage in two (recommended in hot weather or bad weather and depending on the level of the participants), it is possible to spend the night at the Ferme de l'Ubac, before Barret-sur-Méouge. To do this, at the Purgatoire sign (5), follow the direction of the GR® Col de Branche. In 10 minutes, you will arrive at the Ferme de l'Ubac.

Accommodation in Izon-la-Bruisse: Izon Nature, guest rooms and table d'hôte, unusual accommodation (cabin, bubble, caravan).

Hike in the Baronnies Provençales Regional Nature Park and pass through the Natura 2000 site of the Gorges de la Méouge.
This hike is best undertaken in April-May-June and September-October. In summer, it can be very hot in the Baronnies Provençales, and in winter, some paths (particularly in the Gorges de la Méouge) may be impassable or snow-covered.

Set off with plenty of water as most of the fountains are not checked and some (such as in Izon-la-Bruisse) may have a very low flow rate in all seasons. However, on the square in Barret-sur-Méouge (a few dozen metres from the route, after the school and the inn), the fountain seems to be drinkable.

In the Gorges de la Méouge and on the Crête de Chabre, some passages are a little exposed for those prone to vertigo. Nothing too complicated, even for beginners, but you need to be careful in wet weather or strong winds.

Worth a visit

From the Crêtes de Chabre, the view of the Southern Alps, the Écrins, the Dévoluy, the Baronnies peaks and the Ventoux is exceptional, so if you have split the stage in two, it may be tempting to spend more time on the ridges. At the Col de la Crousette, it is possible to continue on the GR® to reach the Col de St-Ange. This allows you to cover more of the ridge to the Col St-Jean, but significantly lengthens the stage (I would say by about an hour).

A very beautiful two-day hike with a night at the Ferme de l'Ubac (very warm welcome).
On the first day, we followed the route through the gorges, then the next day along the Chabre ridges. So there was a variety of landscapes.
A slight change to the route to reach the Chabre ridges: the orange/red marked GRP no longer follows the forest track but climbs directly to the ridge to reach the Col St Ange... We followed the track as indicated on the map, which climbs more gently.
On the ridges, there was a beautiful 360° view of the snow-capped mountains from Dévoluy to Cheval Blanc (Digne).
We stayed two nights in Yzon la Bruisse to enjoy a walk on the Montagne de Chamousse, which is magnificent and not to be missed!
