Along the Méouge Gorges with a return via Pierre Grosse

Immerse yourself in the refreshing atmosphere of the Méouge Gorges and the forest that covers its southern slopes.
Starting from the Roman bridge, this route follows the course of the river via theGRP®® Sud de Buëch-Méouge (Baronnies Provençales Regional Park), then climbs into the woods of Pierre Grosse to overlook the gorges, offering several viewpoints.

Note that some people prefer to do it in the opposite direction so they can finish by cooling off in the Méouge!

Description of the walk

From the east, go to Châteauneuf-de-Chabre and cross the village of Le Plan, heading west. Take the D942 towards Gorges de la Méouge and park in the Roman bridge car park.
In summer, as the car park fills up quickly, shuttle buses provide easier access to the gorges.

(S/E) Drive carefully along the D942 and descend via the GRP®, marked in yellow and red, to reach the Roman bridge over the Méouge.

(1) Cross the bridge over the Méouge. Then climb up to the right via a few hairpin bends, still on the GRP®, above the river.

(2) Take the time to look at the waterfall, but be careful at the edge of the cliff!
Follow the gorges overlooking the river, still on the GRP®®.

(3) At the crossroads, stay on the right bank (downstream) and continue on the GRP®. Note that it is easy to access the riverbank near the footbridge.

(4) Continue straight ahead and ignore the paths that climb to the left.
TheGRP® then winds along the river, mainly high up (cliff) but also at the water's edge from time to time. There are numerous small waterfalls to cross with a slight incline.

(5) At the Roche Coupée promontory, admire the view over the gorges and continue along the path opposite.

(6) Leave the path that climbs to the left and continue on theGRP®® opposite, which runs along the gorges towards Rocher du Château and then Saint-Pierre-Avez. Be careful: the descent of the Gourgouriou scree slope is quite steep and slippery. At Serre Beylon, leave the path that descends to the right and continue straight ahead for about 40 metres.

(7) Leave theGRP®® and take the track that climbs up to the left.

(8) At the crossroads, turn left towards Antonaves.

(9) Continue along the path opposite, marked in yellow. The path descends steadily. Ignore the poorly marked paths on the right at elevation 889 (Bergerie Gay) and on the left descending to "la Plaine".

(10) Continue straight ahead, taking the path heading north-east, still towards Antonaves.

(11) Continue along the track opposite.

(12) When you reach the "la Plaine" crossroads, turn left to descend towards the Gorges de la Méouge, heading west.

(13) After about 500 m, take the path that dips to the right, marked with a few yellow markers. The slope becomes steep in places. After a long descent, you will arrive above the Gorges de la Méouge, near the Romanesque bridge.

(1) Cross it again to return to the car park where you started (S/E).

Practical information

There is a fountain in the centre of the village of Antonaves.

Be careful! Crossing the Gourgouriou scree slope between (6) and (7) involves a fairly steep passage on a slippery slope. To make this section more accessible, hike in the opposite direction so that you are climbing this section rather than descending it. TheGRP®® trail along the gorges crosses several waterfalls , which may be frozen in winter. Crossing them can be a little tricky as the path is narrow and slightly sloping (some scree).

Longer alternative via the village of Antonaves: at the point (12), take the track that descends to the right towards the village, heading south. At the "Rivet 667 m" junction (just above Antonaves), continue along the track opposite to reach the village. Then take the "Chemin de Daumas" street which climbs to the left, heading north, and turns into a forest track. It is again marked in red and yellow. Walking along and overlooking the Méouge, you will arrive at the Roman bridge, near the starting car park.
Note that it may be easier to park in the village and use it as the starting point for the route.

Very beautiful hike. The gorge is magnificent.
Be careful in the "icefall" area: there are rockslides on the path and an eroded section just after, where it is difficult to stand. Risk of falling.
The climb up the carriage road between 7 and 8 is not particularly exciting...

Very beautiful route, but I agree with a previous hiker's opinion that the Perrier section is very dangerous. There are no safety measures in place, and it is a very steep and slippery descent, which we went down on our backsides to avoid the risk of falling. To make this section more accessible, you need to do the hike in the opposite direction, so that you climb this area rather than descend it. I would like to thank those responsible for this hike for putting ropes in place at this location to prevent accidents.

the circuit has been greatly improved by the installation of protective cables along the route, but unfortunately not in the place where they would be most useful (crossing the Gourgouriou scree slope with a very steep descent on a slippery slope); I was forced to use a rope to secure the people hiking with me

Did it in reverse today, finishing with the gorges and a swim. Perfect!
It's not a relaxing hike as there are few flat sections. It's uphill or downhill all the time. Please note that access by car is not possible. The car parks are closed during the summer. You have to take the shuttle bus before the village of Châteauneuf. €5/adult. There are crowds in the gorges around the bridge and waterfall, but further up there is space to picnic and swim. Enjoy!

Don't hesitate to do the route in reverse. Starting with a good climb and finishing with a dip in the Méouge can be pleasant depending on the weather and your departure time...
Similarly, make sure you bring plenty to drink...
The site is very beautiful and the swimming is pleasant. If you are curious, you will discover a place with pools where you can be alone...
If you want to spend two days there, you can visit Sisteron and continue on to Les Pénitents in Le Méé...
In short, it's the perfect weekend destination!
Finally, a gem to share with each other... I recommend the Barret sur Méouge campsite with its swimming pool. Simple but very pleasant. The owner, the former mayor of the village, is very friendly. You can have dinner at L'auberge de Barret sur Méouge, the only place to eat, with a shaded terrace and excellent food... The truffle cocotte eggs are to die for...
