Fondurane Tour

A short trip to the end of Lake Saint-Cassien in the Fondurane area. A beautiful climb at the start and a superb view of the Estérel.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park of the Fondurane Biological Reserve.

(S/E) Cross the bridge over the Biançon (a tributary of Lake Saint-Cassien). Continue straight ahead on the Fondurane path. You will come to a Y-junction.

(1) Keep to the right, ignoring the path marked by a barrier on the left, which is the return path.
About 100 m further on, turn right onto Chemin de la Basse Carpenée and continue straight ahead until you reach the metal barrier (point G56 on the Basse Carpenée).

(2) Continue along this same path, climbing in a series of switchbacks at first, then straight ahead. You will reach a second metal barrier, near a cistern marked CLN2, on the left side of the path.

(3) Go around the cistern. Keep left, a hundred metres further on, to follow a path that serves as a shortcut and continue climbing a little before a long descent. Start another climb, pass under a power line and reach a fork.

(4) Turn left and follow the Chemin des Crêtes towards Fondurane. Continue climbing alongside the EDF power line, then pass under it twice. Les Esterets du Lac and the A8 motorway can be seen below on the right. Lake Saint-Cassien is visible from time to time.

(5) Pass under the EDF power line for the third time and begin the descent. You will reach the junction with the GR®49, which runs alongside the lake (elevation 66).

(6) Continue left on the track that leads to the barrier seen at the start.

(1) Retrace your steps to return to the car park where you started (S/E).

An easy and enjoyable walk. The butterfly lavender was in bloom and there were a few irises at the start of the hike. It was already a bit warm for hiking in this area, but it was manageable. We did a little extra circular loop towards the end to go to a viewpoint overlooking the lake.

Route taken on 5 May with a few scattered clouds. Cool shade and warm sunshine.
A family-friendly, carefree route. It had rained heavily, and the countryside was green and filled with beautiful and unusual flowers. It was just the right day to enjoy a sandwich without a care in the world...

Not many views, especially of Lake St Cassien, but pleasant and very quiet (in April when it was cloudy).

Frequented even on weekdays (walk taken on a Tuesday).
I recommend taking a short detour (circular at point 6 on the map) to the birdwatching hide: I was able to photograph a heron.
I would classify this route as easy.

This hike on wide trails is not difficult.
It is suitable for families, with plenty of places to picnic, particularly near the hunters' huts (which have chairs and benches).
Having already done this hike in May 2021, I noticed a significant drop in the lake's water level when crossing the bridge at the start of the hike.

Be careful at the start, where it says to "cross the bridge" which is not visible from the car park. You must either continue along the tarmac road or cross and take the small dirt track.

A route without difficulty as the forest paths are wide, well maintained and easy to walk on. Good elevation gain. The suggested direction is ideal as the climbs are less steep.

Hike done today, but with a change to the route. We took it in the opposite direction to number 5, then left this track to take the one on the left which leads back to the lake where we had a picnic after passing through flowering mimosas. However, there is a slightly technical descent down a well-worn path. Return without any difficulty via the track along the lake.

The description is sometimes a little vague, particularly point 3. If you keep too far to the left, you end up in some beehives, whereas the correct path is a little further in between. Fortunately, you can find your way with the map and a little common sense. There are also a few junctions where you wonder which way to go, but you should always continue on the main path.

Point 5 is a very nice picnic area, it's the best viewpoint and there are grassy areas with or without shade. It would be good to indicate this (we had our picnic at point 4, which is less attractive).

But it's a lovely walk, thanks to its author!

Hello
An easy and very interesting hike, despite a slight hiccup when passing under the EDF line for the first time.
It wasn't very clear to me at that point.

Hello,
First of all, thank you to the person who took the trouble to create this hike on Visorando. It's always a bit of work, and it's thanks to people who do this work that the site is so rich.
As for the hike itself, I think its duration and difficulty are overestimated. I'm neither a keen hiker nor a great athlete, yet I completed it in two hours, half the estimated time. Admittedly, I circled it at a brisk pace, but I didn't push myself either. There are no very steep climbs or narrow, winding paths full of stones. You follow a well-marked path the whole way, without any difficulty.
This doesn't detract from the appeal of this hike, you just need to know that it takes closer to two hours than four. And that I found it "easy", but that's just my opinion.
I used the GPX file to find my way around and everything went well, with no chance of getting lost.

In any case, thank you again for creating this file here.

A pleasant route to do when it's not too hot, as there is little shade. Unobstructed view of the Estérel mountains, with a few glimpses of the lake.
