The Siagne Gorges and the Defens Communal Wood

This is a very shady hike that starts in Montouroux, descends to the Siagne through woods, passes by the beautiful Pont des Tuves bridge and its swimming spots, and returns through a beautiful forest of centuries-old oak trees.

⚠️ 15/09/2025: It appears to be impossible to start the hike at the starting point and connect to point 2: private path with signs and fencing. Hike awaiting verification.

Description of the walk

Reach Montauroux and head north towards Chemin du Stade. Feel free to use the "Go to start" function on the Visorando app. Park in car park no. 1 among the trees, or in the second car park in front of the stadium.

(S/E) Walk back a few dozen metres along the small access road to the car park to find a path on the left marked with blue signposts. Take this flat path heading south-east through the woods. You will come to a road with signs for Pont des Tuves.

(1) Follow this road to the left for 150 metres until you reach a path that descends to the left.

(2) Continue along this path until you reach the small road and the banks of the Siagne.

(3) A sign indicates that the path is private but passable. Follow the river (the road sometimes strays a little from it) to reach a crossroads.

(4) Take the track opposite, marked in blue/yellow, which quickly joins the Pont des Tuves (or Pont des Gabres) bridge.

(5) You can visit this site, which is particularly popular with swimmers and diving enthusiasts in summer. You can cross the bridge to go under the small waterfall on the other side.
Then take the path that runs along the right bank of the Siagne and climbs back up towards Pont de Rey. Some sections may be slippery due to the humidity. The path moves away from the riverbed to climb a little into the forest and then returns to the Siagne to reach Pont de Rey.

(6) Do not cross the bridge; stay on the right bank. Follow the path on the far left, heading south, which climbs up into the forest, marked with yellow and red/yellow markings.

(7) Turn left, following the markings. The slope becomes steeper, but this long climb remains fairly steady. This will take you to the D96.
In places, there are views on the left of the village of Saint-Cézaire overlooking the Siagne Gorges.

(8) Turn left and follow the road for about 200 metres until you reach a large cistern.

(9) Leave the road and take the marked path on the left, turning your back on the cistern. Continue along the main path through the Bois Communal du Défens.
Further on, a sign indicates the passage through a sanctuary of old oak trees. Walk through the forest, taking the time to admire these majestic trees. You will come to a crossroads at a cistern.

(10) Continue straight ahead.

(11) Walk alongside a stadium and its car park and rejoin the road that leads you to car park no. 1 (S/E).

Practical information

Variation on the route The Tuve bridge, the Siagne Gorges and the Défens woods, different up to the Tuves bridge, then identical to the original route.
The path that joins the Siagne is less difficult to descend than the one suggested by Zigmund, whose route is mentioned above, and whom I would like to thank for sharing it.

Be sure to wear good shoes.
On sunny days, a towel and swimsuit may come in handy.
To my knowledge, there are no water sources on the circuit, but there is plenty of shade and cool paths along the river.

In the nearby area

The Pont des Tuves (5): also known as the Pont des Gabres in Saint-Cézaire, it was built in 1802 on the remains of a Roman bridge to cross the Siagne, then restored in 1978

Along the route, the ruins of mills, sheepfolds and the old paper mill bear witness to former agricultural and craft activities.

Bois Communal du Defens: centuries-old oak trees are grouped together in an easily accessible sanctuary. Please respect the habitat of these majestic beings by staying on the marked path.

the information regarding the closure of access to the car park at the starting point is completely accurate!
you now have to go past the stadium and continue to point No. 10 to descend towards the Pont des Tuves bridge... Furthermore, this path, like the one that climbs up from the bridge (point No. 6), has been particularly eroded by the rain and there are now only rocks to climb over! Not recommended for our senior hiker friends! Jacques

As indicated at the top of the sheet, there is indeed a difficulty at the start, as the trail between the start and waypoint 1 is now located on private land, which has been hastily fenced off.
To be honest, not knowing this, we crossed the fence and took the route originally planned on this land. Other hikers familiar with the site explained to us that there was no real risk.
The section is quite short and the path is very visible. And there was no real alternative. Not ideal, but everything went well.
Beyond that, there were no difficulties. The route was very pleasant, often shaded. The weather was sunny and not too hot. We had a picnic at Pont des Moulins, as it was still too early to stop at Pont des Tuves, which isn't ideal because you have to climb back up afterwards while you're still digesting! So it's better to take a break before, and walk on flat ground for a while before climbing back up to the plateau.

HIKE ON 28 SEPTEMBER 2024

HIKE IN MONTAUROUX

Here we are, all gathered at the Montauroux football stadium, ready for an expedition to the Pont des Tuves bridge overlooking the Siagne, a beautiful river with crystal clear water. To reach this bridge, we follow a track known as a drovers' road, which is stony, uneven with protruding tree roots and devoid of soil. We walk like this from our departure at 10:15 a.m., and finally arrive at the bridge at 11:30 a.m. Pleasantly satisfied with the beauty of the place, we continue towards the Pont des Moulins or Pont de Rey, which requires an hour's walk before we can enjoy a well-deserved snack at around 1 p.m. The Rey Bridge is superb, overlooking the turbulent waters of the Siagne in a stunning setting. Next to the river, there are waterfalls hidden by the surrounding greenery and trees. After our snack, we resumed our hike to find our vehicles. We were not disappointed by the return journey, because although we had descended towards the Suve Bridge, we now had to climb back up. hello climb! We arrived on a road, then took a path and then a track that this time descended gently and finally a dirt track to our cars. End of the journey at 4.15 p.m. Tired but satisfied with this beautiful hike.

Very quiet when we started out to avoid the predicted heat, even though most of the hike is under trees. Very pretty route.
The bridge is magnificent and the riverbanks are perfect for swimming...
Thanks for the info.

A superb hike that kept us cool under the trees. Unforgettable memories of the Tuve and Rey bridges.
A beautiful route between these two bridges along La Sagne.

We preferred to follow this route rather than the one called Pont des Tuves in Visorando. Although slightly longer overall, the descent to the Siagne is less busy and has a steady slope, and then you walk along the Siagne for longer before arriving at Les Tuves, the highlight of the show.
The start of the walk is marked with blue signs, which are not very easy to find as there are many paths around the stadium, but after that there are no difficulties in finding your way.
A very beautiful hike despite the large number of visitors. The Siagne river is flowing strongly and the vegetation is lush with lots of flowers.
The climb through the magnificent and impressive old oak forest is well worth it, despite the mosquitoes that swarm in this area!
There is also a rich architectural heritage (bridges and mills, albeit in ruins).
A beautiful day in the cool air, although swimming in summer would be an added bonus.

Thank you very much for this wonderful hike.
The route along the Siagne is very pleasant, the waterfall at the Pont des Tuves is very pretty and the end of the route in the sanctuary of hundred-year-old oak trees is relaxing.
The climb is very easy.
A shaded route that must be ideal during hot weather.

Well-marked trail. Pleasant path along the banks of the magnificent Siagne River. The Pont des Tuves bridge is superb. The climb is gradual and the walk through the forest of giant oaks brings this hike to a pleasant end.
