In the footsteps of the bearded vulture around Pipay

Loop between Prapoutel and Pipay, from the forest to the Balcon des Sept Laux trail, offering breathtaking views of the Chartreuse Massif and birds flying across the Belledonne sky. With a bit of luck, you may spot a bearded vulture, one of only four species of vulture in France, which is currently being reintroduced in the Alps.

Description of the walk

The walk starts from Prapoutel, opposite the restaurant "Le Prapouta". You can park in one of the resort's many car parks, all of which are free.

(S/E) Head towards the tourist office and take the stairs on the left to reach the road. Follow it to the right until you reach a left turn where a forest path leads towards Pipay.

(1) Follow this forest path on the right, taking your time, until you reach a first crossroads where the signposts indicate the direction of Pipay, to the right.

(2) Follow the path. Be careful, this path is quite steep and the climb is long. Continue until you reach another crossroads.

(3) Continue to follow the signs for Pipay, taking the path that climbs to the right. This leads to a small meadow where the path disappears. Stay on the left side of the meadow to quickly find the path that continues to climb towards another path, which is much gentler and leads directly to Pipay.

(4) Once in Pipay, turn right and climb the track that winds under the cables of the Grand Cerf cable car.

(5) When you reach the Piste de la Chanterelle, follow it to the right until you reach a crossroads, enjoying the breathtaking view of the Grésivaudan valley and the Chartreuse mountains.

(6) At the crossroads, take the path that descends towards the Gypaète chairlift.

(7) When you reach the chairlift, turn left and continue along the Piste de la Chanterelle, which is easy to follow until you reach Prapoutel (S/E).

Notes

Some sections, particularly between Pipay and the Gypaète cable car, may be occupied by herds in summer. Do not disturb them and keep your dogs on a leash throughout these sections.

A small shelter between (5) and (6) allows you to rest while admiring the view.
