In the footsteps of Philippe Lebon, starting from Charmes-la-Grande

This walk leads to Brachay, the birthplace of Philippe Lebon (1767), inventor of lighting gas produced by distilling wood. A bust in his honour stands in front of the town hall, and two houses that once belonged to him can also be seen.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park by the Blaiseron, in the village of Charmes-la-Grande.

(S/E) Walk through Charmes-la-Grande, taking Rue des Vieux on the right, then Grande Rue on the left, which leads onto the D13; follow this road to the right until you reach the last houses.

(1) Take a tarmac road on the left, which soon turns into a dirt track. Continue uphill to reach a crossroads of paths.

(2) Turn 90° to the right, follow the fields, then reach, at the foot of Mont Cadelle, the junction for the Vallée d’Embarvau.

(3) Turn left and head downhill along the ridge. You will reach the edge of the wood opposite.

(4) Turn right towards Brachay, reach the Source du Pâtis, then the pumping station.

(5) Continue straight ahead on the D126 and emerge in the village of Brachay.

(6) Cross Brachay in a straight line, and continue along the path opposite. Cross the Blaiseron bridge, and continue to the edge of the forest.

(7) Turn right, at a 90° angle, to follow the edge of the Bois des Charmes, at a place called La Peute Côte. Reach the small village of Charmes-en-l'Angle via a mostly flat stretch.

(8) Walk past the private château and through the village along its single street. When you reach the wayside shrine, turn right and continue to Charmes-la-Grande via the Côte de la Fontaine au Suif path. At the entrance to Charmes-la-Grande, follow the road to the left, then, at the next junction, take the D226 to the right (Rue du Moulin), until you reach the picnic area (S/E).
