Description of the walk

Car park at Mathons Town Hall and village hall.

(S/E) With your back to the town hall, head right and follow the Grande Rue to the first junction. Turn left into Rue du Pâquis and continue to a three-way junction.

(1) Follow the left-hand track (Chemin du Noyer des Vignes). The tarmac ends and the road becomes a farm track. Follow this track, climb up the Côte du Moulin to reach the RD181 and turn right, following the road. You will come out onto the RD60.

(2) Cross carefully towards Guindrecourt-aux-Ormes and enter the Bois des Convers. Walk for about 800 m.

(3) Turn left onto a forestry track and follow it until the6th section on the right.

(4) Do not take the track but turn onto a north-westerly path branching off to the left of the track. Walk for about 600 m, take the first path on the left and continue to the next junction.

(5) Turn right, then left about a hundred metres further on. Stay on the main track, ignoring the side tracks. Descend into a valley and join a forest road called la Fosse aux Loups.

(6) Follow this forest road uphill until you reach the T-junction with Chemin de Derrière le Village, at the entrance to Morancourt. Turn left, walk for about 250 m, then head right onto Rue Madame. When you reach the church, turn left and you’ll arrive at Rue Nationale (RD60). Follow this road to the right until you reach the pedestrian crossing.

(7) Cross the road, turn left then right to follow Rue des Charmes, passing by the foot of the water tower. Reach a three-way junction with a wayside cross and take the left-hand lane. At the top of the slope (Haut de Maize), turn left and continue to the next three-way junction.

(8) Turn right, staying on the tarmac road which, a little further on, becomes a farm track and leads straight to the entrance to Mathons. Turn right into Grande Rue and head for the car park (S/E).
