Sudermühlen Wilsede Eight

The heathland around Wilsede and the nearby Wilseder Berg is among the largest heathland areas in Europe. The heathland stretches across some 230 km², offering unique, barren habitats for plants and animals. This cultural and natural area was placed under protection as early as 1921.

The walking tour offers a varied route through the typical heathland and pine forests. The paths are mostly unpaved and often quite sandy.

Description of the walk

Start: It is advisable to travel to this hike by car. There are very few options for reaching the area by public transport. During the summer months, the Heideshuttle may be helpful for those travelling by public transport.

By car, you can reach the starting point via the A7, taking the Egestorf exit. There is free parking at the starting point itself. Further parking is available in Ober- and Niederhaverbeck. From there, you will need to walk approximately 3.5 kilometres to Wilsede to join the walking tour.

(S/E) From the Sudermühle car park, we walk across the Schmale Aue and then follow the path straight ahead into the heathland. We cross a short stretch of woodland and continue to the next crossroads.

(1) There, we turn left and continue through the heathland. At the top of the hill, we pass one of the traditional sheepfolds.

(2) At the next crossroads, we continue straight ahead. Shortly after the crossroads, the path curves to the left.

(3) At the next opportunity, we turn left onto the Pastor-Bode-Wanderweg.

(4) A narrow path – the Pastor-Bode-Weg – now leads to the right across the meadow into the woods. In the woods, the path becomes a wooden footbridge – Caution! The footbridge can be very slippery when wet! – At the end of the woodland, we pass through a gate in the pasture fence and then walk across the grazed pasture.

(5) We pass through another gate in the pasture fence and rejoin the Pastor-Bode-Wanderweg. We follow this straight ahead. On this typically sandy heathland path, we pass another of the historic sheep pens.

(6) We reach a junction with the K34 and come to a cobbled road. This road takes us to the right, straight to Wilsede.

(7) After the Milchhalle (there are public toilets outside the building) in Wilsede, we turn left towards Totengrund.

(8) At Totengrund, we turn right and then immediately left down the path to walk along the dip of the Totengrund.

(9) Once in the forest, we continue to the right at the fork in the path. Continue to the next fork.

(10) We come to a forest track and turn left, then immediately right again. After about 600 metres, the path curves to the right. We follow the path until we reach a junction shortly after the forest,

(11) At this junction, we turn left into the heathland. A sandy track leads us past another sheepfold.

(12) We reach the cobbled road that leads back to Wilsede on the left. We turn left and, just a few metres later, immediately right again, across the open pasture towards a wood. After a short stretch through the wood, the path curves to the left.

(5) After a few hundred metres, we pass the gate on Pastor-Bode-Weg and cross the path we took earlier.

(13) At the next opportunity, we turn right and then cross the bridge over the Radenbach.

(3) Shortly afterwards, we rejoin the hiking route we took on the way there – the Pastor-Bode-Wanderweg – and follow this route to the right.

(4) Where we turned right onto the narrow path – the Pastor-Bode-Weg – on the way there, we now continue straight ahead on the track.

(14) The track soon curves to the left. We keep to the right and continue along the narrow path towards Schmale Aue. After crossing Schmale Aue, we turn left at the fork. The path widens slightly for a short while.

(15) The wide path now heads to the right. We keep to the left and take the path.

(16) We now reach the Sudermühle again and continue across the mill grounds. Behind the Sudermühle, we turn right one last time.

(S/E) This brings us back to the starting point of our walk, the Sudermühle car park.

Notes

The paths are often very sandy. Closed-toe footwear is therefore recommended.

There are simple rest areas or benches dotted along the route.

As the walking route passes through open countryside for long stretches, you should not forget your sun protection.

Opening times vary by season for the various restaurants and cafés in Wilsede.

Worth a visit

In addition to the unique heathland, the village of Wilsede and the Totengrund are the particular highlights of the walk.
