Description of the walk

Car park at Étroeungt church.

(S/E) Take Rue des Orfèvres, alongside the church, and head down to the right along Rue Émile Wautier.
At the bottom of the slope, turn left onto Rue Solférino, then turn left again onto Rue Magenta. Walk through the area of the old Magenta quarries. Pass under the RN2 via the culvert.

(1) Turn right, then take the Chemin de Montreuil on the left.
The Chemin de Montreuil is the old road that ran from Étroeungt to the Abbey of Montreuil-les-Dames in Rocquigny. The sunken lane, lined with hedges, climbs and joins a tarmac track (viewpoint over the village of Étroeungt). Turn left and continue for about fifty metres.

(2) Turn right, walk past the “Étroeungt-Larouillies” boundary marker and then take the dirt track directly in front of you.
On this path through the hedgerows, you’ll notice a stone known as ‘la Croix Petit’, erected in 1810. It commemorates an earlier event: the murder of a peasant named Petit by a lord during a hunting party. Ford the Ru de la Fontaine Durand.

(3) Turn left onto the road. After walking about 100m along the tarmac road, continue left along Chemin Martin. Cross the Ru de la Fontaine Durand again,

(4) Then cross the RD964 (take care) and continue along the grassy path until you reach the local track.

(5) Turn left and pass through the hamlet of Petit Bois, going straight on at the junction. This path, running along the edge of the plateau which overlooks the Helpe Mineure Valley for several kilometres, offers numerous views of the valley below.

(6) Head up the dirt track on the left. At the RD964, turn right and continue for about 250m.

(7) Turn left onto the Chemin des Breaux.

(1) Take the underpass beneath the RN once more and follow the outward route to reach the church square (S/E).

Plenty of footpaths and very few roads (and when you are on the road, it’s veeeery remote so there aren’t many vehicles), very peaceful spots with wildlife; the footpaths are sheltered and offer lovely views of the bocage. You’re in the shade just as much as you are in the sun. One footpath has a particularly damp spring, so you’ll need proper walking boots, of course.
Some lovely little hills – good for the thighs.
Étroeungt is a lovely little village; it’s well worth spending a bit more time exploring – don’t stick too strictly to the route!
It took us less time than indicated, as we took quite a few breaks to take photos and stroke the cows.

Wide, sheltered and very well-maintained paths with views of the Avesnes countryside. Make sure you wear sturdy shoes in case of rain (the paths can sometimes be muddy). Few roads and very safe. The weather forecast was accurate.
