Description of the walk

Park in the square by Cartignies church.

(S/E) Facing the church, leave the square by turning left. Head towards Avesnes-sur-Helpe and cross the bridge over the Helpe.

(1) Stay on the D124 towards Saint-Hilaire, then turn onto the small road on the left, the Chemin d’Autreppe, and continue to the hamlet of the same name, which you will pass through.

(2) Continue in the same direction, pass by a wayside shrine and arrive at the Pont de Pierre crossroads.

(3) At a place called Pont de Pierre, continue straight on along Chemin Herbu. Ignore the turn-off to the right onto Ruelle Balour and make your way through the hedgerows. You will see a dairy on your left. The small road leads to a junction with the D117. Continue straight on until you reach the Stop sign.

(4) Turn left to head towards the Grand Fayt mill.

(5) Turn around and, once back at the stop sign, head left towards the hamlet of Pas de Laliau. You’ll see the meandering Helpe river below, and as you pass through the hamlet, you’ll notice a majestic oak tree on your left. Continue to the next junction.

(6) At the junction, turn right twice, just before the weather station. As you walk along the small road, admire the panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. Join the D117.

(7) Cross with care and take a quick first turn left then right. At the next junction, turn right past a small chapel and join a road at a place called Biau Gai.

(8) Turn left then right and follow a quiet path to reach the first houses of Autreppe.

(9) At the entrance to the hamlet, turn left onto a small road running alongside meadows and join the D124.

(10) Turn right and follow it (take care) for 250m. Then take the Chemin des Muids, which descends to the left towards the river. Then turn right onto the D424 and, at the junction, follow the road opposite which leads to the banks of the Helpe. Pass the mill.

(1) Turn left and head straight on to return to the starting car park on the church square (S/E).

Mostly tarmac roads, but very little traffic.
Typical Avesnois bocage landscape dotted with small chapels and oratories.

Hello José, and thank you for your comments.

However, the same route suggested by the Conseil Général gives a distance of 11 km, whereas here it is 13.18 km

Any indication of distance is an estimate and is therefore subject to error. With the hiking software, errors in distances are minimal. I’ve just taken a close look at the route and haven’t spotted any anomalies that might have inflated the figure (loops, deviations, etc.).

So, either the route proposed here includes sections missing from the hike published by the General Council, or their distance is underestimated.

But the same route suggested by the General Council gives a distance of 11 km, whereas here it is 13.18 km... Which is correct?
