Saint-Bauzile (Lozère) walks

A walk to explore the ruins of Montialoux Castle through the Mende State Forest. The castle is situated in the commune of Saint-Bauzile, in Lozère, right in the heart of the Valdonnez valley, in the former province of Gévaudan. Please note: this short walk involves a significant elevation gain.

This route allows you to discover the unusual "Lion" that dominates Balsièges. From its rocky outcrop, it watches over the valley. The hiking trail that runs along the Ravin du Choizal and the slopes of the Causse de Sauveterre will take you to the village of Les Fonts.

Discover the troglodytic chapel and hermitage of San-Chaousou (Saint-Joseph in the local dialect) on the slopes of the Causse de Changefège.

An alternative route to walkno. 2842225:the Bramont Gorges and the hamlet of La Borie. Explore the Bramont Gorges starting from Saint-Étienne-du-Valdonnez, passing through the hamlet of La Fage and returning via Bassy. Most of the route runs through woodland. Beautiful views over the Cham des Bondons, the Echino d’Aze and one of the puechs, as well as the Truc de Balduc.

Walk up the Bramont Gorges and explore a magnificent and picturesque area with its steep cliffs and turbulent river. This unusual landscape offers a pleasant cool spot in summer. Pass through the small village of drystone shelter, with its typical Causse houses, located in the foothills of the Mont Lozère massif.

Starting from the small village of Paros (no, don't dream, it's not the Cyclades!) above Molines (commune of Ispagnac) in Lozère, this is a beautiful hike with views of the Tarn in the first part, then of the Causse du Sauveterre.

A pleasant hike through oak and beech forests to discover the Fagette waterfall and the hamlets of Asprettes and La Fagette, with their superb granite houses and old ovens.

The first part of the hike follows the Balade au pays des Menhirs discovery trail. The rest of the route continues to the hamlet of La Fage. In addition to the Clocher des Tourmentes bell tower marked on the IGN map, you can admire beautiful granite houses covered with slate tiles. Unfortunately, while some have been restored, others are partly abandoned.

The 13th-century Church of Sainte-Hippolyte, destroyed by the Huguenots in 1562, was rebuilt in 1630. It is partly built of limestone tuff. Several quarries were located in the area near the streams.

To the west, the Ispagnac valley is closed off by the Causse de Sauveterre, which overlooks it by about 500 metres. The route takes you up from this pleasant countryside to the much harsher landscape of the causse. The two hamlets of Paros and Mas André mark this route, which winds through the woods for almost half of its length.

A circular route starting from Les Sagnes, passing through the hamlet of Auriac, across meadows and through woods.You can also see the two Clochers de Tourmente and, in the distance, the Château du Tournel.

Located at the crossroads of the Grands Causses, Mont Lozère and the Cévennes valleys, the Ispagnac valley boasts a wide variety of geological features. Limestone, granite and schist blend together, creating diverse landscapes shaped by the nature of the subsoil. This trail, which runs along the foot of the Causse Méjean, offers you a walk through a schistose terroir.

From the banks of the Lot and its lush grassy meadows, the historic private château of Ressouches presents itself magnificently to the passer-by, and the hamlet of Le Villard, just before the climb up to the plateau, is sure to make an impression.

On the rocky spur overlooking the Lot, downstream from Chanac, there are two settlements: Le Villard Vieux, the first hilltop village, and Le Villard Jeune, the second village. In the Middle Ages, Le Villard was part of the domain of the Château de Chanac, an episcopal possession of which only the famous keep remains today.The route differs from the marked route by remaining below the Causse du Villard before reaching the "fortified" village. The return to Chanac, along the Lot, allows you to see the Château de Ressouches (private) along the way and offers the opportunity to visit the village at the end of the walk.

Menhirs are found in Brittany. The proof: the name itself is of Breton origin (maen hir = long stone). And even more so when they are made of granite. But if I told you that one of Europe's main megalithic sites is in Lozère, would you believe me? The standing stones along this route at the foot of Mont Lozère are like those scattered by Tom Thumb: just follow them to find your way.

This descent between the two beautiful villages of the Gorges du Tarn is ideal for those who want to explore the gorges at a leisurely pace, with an easy route and plenty to see.

A picturesque walk in the hills above Montrodat The Chazelles trail (Chazelles meaning ‘old shepherds’ huts’ in Occitan) offers interesting views over the Marvejols area, the Aubrac and the surrounding Trucs hills. It crosses the Poujoulet plateau, criss-crossed by low stone walls.

A lovely, easy circular walk in the north of the Causse Mejean with little elevation gain and stunning panoramic views.

A very smooth mountain bike ride that follows the route around Lac de Charpal, then climbs to reach the peaks of the Margeride. No technical difficulties, no sections where you need to carry your bike, but a good climb on a tarmac track before reaching the Truc de Fortunio.

Tour du Truc de Fortunio, a hike of moderate difficulty due to the limited elevation gain. The scenery is varied: wild and surrounded by nature. A breathtaking view upon reaching the highest point.

Hike around Lake Charpal in a completely unspoilt protected natural site. The path does not stray far from the lake, so the elevation gain is very low and the route is easy. Much of the route is through woodland, ideal in summer when it is hot.

Tour of Lake Charpal in Lozère. An easy route on a relatively flat path, despite being at an altitude of over 1,300 metres. Beautiful views of the lake along the entire route, alternating between forest, meadows and peat bogs.

In the heart of the Tarn Gorges, Saint-Chély du Tarn is a little gem nestled in the cirque of the same name. Its wealth comes from the limestone plateau above and the bridge that crosses the river. What a contrast between the cool, green gorge and the arid plateau! But these are two sides of the same interactive landscape. It's up to you to discover them.
