Saas Fee - Grachen

A long balcony stage allowing you to climb up the Saas Fée valley, dominating it by about 500m and sometimes more. A spectacular route passing from one valley floor to another, with the special feature of being able to see the next change in valley floor in the distance.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Tour of Monte Rosa

Description of the walk

(S) Leave the lodge hotel in the centre of Saas Fée and follow the asphalt road to the trail in the hamlet of Tali.

(1) Enter the forest and begin a gentle climb, passing Egge, then Senggboden and finally Balmiboden, where there are signs to guide you. You will then reach the turbulent Biderbach river.

(2) Cross through the tunnel under the river and continue at almost the same altitude to reach Bockroang at an altitude of 2,259 metres.

(3) Continue at the same altitude in a north-westerly direction before turning 90° left, i.e. due west towards the Schweibbach river.

(4) Cross a footbridge, then begin a long climb through Läckerna and Stock.

(5) Continue along a series of gentle ascents and descents until you reach the Chleini Furgge crossroads.

(6) Finish the route at the upper station of Hannigalp (E), the end of the hike.

Then take the cable car back to Grachen.

Notes

Water is present everywhere along the route, either in streams or in springs gushing from the rocks.
This stage is Very Difficult, as noted in the summary, because although it is on an excellent, wide trail, it is always on a slope. The slope is around 30% and there is often nothing to stop hikers from falling. In addition, it is long and the delay we incurred forced us to finish it via the Hannigalp cable car.
We almost touched the ibex (isolated males and females with their young) throughout the route.
