Description of the walk

The departure point is Pralognan-la-Vanoise. Leave the Tarentaise Valley at Moutiers and continue to the end of the D915. Park at the entrance to the village.

(S/E) Reach the cross-country skiing plateau via the Crozon Morgat bypass.

(1) Take the snowshoe trail that leads to La Chollière (1450m).

(2) Walk up through the hamlet, enjoying the beautiful views, then take the snowshoe trail on the left towards Pont de Gerlon. You will reach the crossroads with the Route des Prioux.

(3) Turn left to reach Pont de Gerlon (1592m).

(4) Caution: from here on, the route is no longer "safe", so do not continue if there is a risk of avalanches.

Cross the bridge and make a wide turn northwards then southwards. Continue along the forest road in more or less the same direction. We saw chamois on the way up and down before arriving at the hamlet of Les Prioux (1711m).

(5) Follow the track where a sign indicates the Roc de la Pêche refuge is 45 minutes away (it took us 1 hour 15 minutes to reach it). A little further on, the slope becomes steeper with a series of large hairpin bends. You will reach a flat area before arriving at the hamlet of Montaimont.

(6). Go around a hillock, cross the stream, then climb up to the Roc de la Pêche refuge (1,911 m), which you will reach after a 3½-hour walk.

(7) Descend by the same route to the Prioux road junction.

(3) From there, take a trail parallel to the cross-country ski track which leads through the forest to the Nordic area. Then continue left along the snowshoe trail which goes around the plateau to the west and joins the entrance to Pralognan and the starting point (S/E).

We made the ascent on 28/03/24 and the descent on 29/03/24 after spending the night at the Roc de la Pêche refuge.
The ascent took 3.5 hours as indicated, in boots, in the snow, then in snowshoes a few hundred metres after Les Prioux.
The descent took 2 hours.

In my opinion, it is best to stay on the left side of the valley when climbing (and therefore on the right when descending). The entire section of the Petit Mt Blanc national forest is full of avalanche corridors, which are not very safe for snowshoeing.
A lovely, accessible hike leading to superb landscapes and a warm welcome at the refuge.

Outing on 9 March 2024 after a beautiful snowfall.
I made the round trip via the trail that climbs up to the refuge. The climb was very gradual and easy.
I did not take the GR5 trail because there were several avalanche-prone sections.
There are quite a few possibilities for ski touring routes from the refuge.
The refuge is very welcoming and the food is excellent.

Hike under a hot sun (too hot). No particular difficulties. Completed in 5 hours round trip.
Arrival at the refuge was very pleasant. Wanted to continue on to Peclet Polset.
Hike a little monotonous in summer, but really very pleasant in winter.

Please note that in winter, you should not follow the route indicated as "cross the stream, then climb up to the Roc de la Pêche refuge". Do not descend towards the stream at the Montaimont chalets, but continue straight ahead and cross the stream further on (follow the red and blue poles along the path).
It is still a beautiful short hike, too short in summer and really enjoyable in winter.
On the way down, rather than taking the same route from the Gerlon bridge to Pralognan, it is better to descend via the trail for snowshoers and pedestrians at Rocher Blanc.

The hike in September was not difficult at all. A bit long, but there were herds of alpine cattle and marmots that weren't very shy. The refuge is large and beautiful. There were a few people in this GR valley. There are circular loops that can be done on each side.
