The three lakes

Looking for a varied hike with different terrain? Then look no further than the Three Lakes Hike.
Rooted footpaths, forest tracks, uneven terrain, crossing the Gazon du Faing, Lac Noir, Lac Blanc and Lac des Truites (also known as Lac du Forlet) and, on a clear day, a diversion to the Belmont Rocher observatory or Rocher de Hans.
A lovely hike to do in fine weather. It's better for the scenery.

Description of the walk

From Orbey, take the D48 II towards Les Lacs, Col du Bonhomme. Go past the village of Pairis for about 4.5km and turn left onto the D48.3. Reach the Lac Noir car park, which will be the start of the walk.

(S/E) Follow the D48.3 road for 25m.

(1) Take the yellow rectangular path on your left. This is the Sentier Cornélius. It joins a wider path that curves left and then right.

(2) About ten metres before you reach the D48.2 road, take the small track on your left.

(3) After 150m, turn right to continue along the Lac Blanc.

(4) Continue along the D48 to the left for around 200m, then turn left onto the Sentier Freppel, signposted Cercle Rouge. Continue for 15 minutes, then turn left onto the yellow rectangular path, ignoring the right-hand path signposted "Col du Calvaire".

(5) A short climb will take you to the ski lifts. Take the forest track on your left, GR®5Rectangle Rouge.

(6) Climb up to the Gazon du Faing, following the signs for the Hautes Chaumes crossing or the Yellow Triangle signs, which will take you 30 minutes later to the Lac des Truites.

(7) Turn left and head downhill for 200m until you come to a junction signposted Lac des Truites, on the right, marked with red triangles. The descent continues along a steep, winding path to the Lac des Truites.

(8) At the Forlet farmhouse inn, continue around the lake to the right, marked with red triangles, to reach the dam.

(9) Continue along the path on your left, marked Cercle Rouge, to cross the Forêt Domaniale des deux lacs. At the crossroads of 4 paths, veer slightly to the left to continue straight ahead and join a track a few metres further on, following it to the right. After a bend to the left, fork right onto a path as far as the next crossroads.

(10) Follow the Red and White Rectangle markings. On the left, cross a track to reach the Lac Noir car park (S/E).

Nice outing, well signposted... good shaded areas... welcoming inn at Lac du Forlet... beautiful views... Technical sections in places... when I see them in trainers, it scares me...

I shortened the route a little by going via Hans Rock, which is shorter but more difficult for those who are not used to it.
A beautiful hike that I do every year.
Thank you

I took the wrong path about a fifth of the way into the hike, near Lac Blanc. The walk was therefore shorter, which wasn't too bad as the trail was quite steep for inexperienced hikers, including a child who complains a lot.

A very beautiful hike under sunny skies. There were a lot of people out that day, but it was a public holiday in Germany We were a small group and had no problems, but it should be noted that most of the paths are steep and rocky with lots of stones, boulders and roots. The "moderate" rating for this hike is more appropriate for experienced hikers. Thanks to the author for this superb route!

I think it's my fault, but medium difficulty should be medium for people who are used to hiking, not for the average person.
Personally, I loved it and thought it was great, but perhaps we could add that almost the entire route is on steep slopes with large rocks to climb over and roots, requiring good balance to complete without any problems or risks.
I repeat, it's fantastic, but the average level is for experienced hikers.
I recommend it and will pay more attention to reviews in future.

This is a great family hike to discover the 3 beautiful lakes (Noir, Blanc and du Forlet), with beautiful panoramic views from the crest path.

The route markings, which were very different from those we were familiar with and too confusing due to the many itineraries criss-crossing the three lakes, led us astray several times.

Made with snow and ice. Superb hike, but you absolutely had to have crampons because some of the paths were frozen waterfalls. The grass of the faing was also frozen but with crampons, it was absolutely magnificent. The climbs are gentle but the descent to the Lac du Forlet is demanding. I would recommend

It's so beautiful! I think it's beautiful because it does something to me.
Who hasn't said those words? Beauty is simply beauty, it stands on its own. It's a kind of aesthetic emotion that acts on us and takes us by surprise when we suddenly see something that fills us with wonder.
Hello everyone!
I often say to myself that what I find beautiful can eventually touch other people. That's why I want to share beauty, to show you what I find beautiful, to invite you to enjoy these moments too.
And this was once again the case during our walk on Tuesday 14 January, the day of the Full Moon of the Wolf 2025.
Oh la la! Indeed, full moons are sometimes associated with a certain mistrust of the influences they might have on us. And that's exactly what happened on this day. While three-quarters of the day's hike was truly 'beautiful', the end was horrible, stressful and even dangerous, as we were trapped on a path transformed into a veritable icefall where we unfortunately fell several times: haematomas, bruises, bleeding, we had it all...
I'll leave you to discover the good and the bad via the link to the slideshow below...
Have a great week!

The indication "go back up on the D48III" didn't help me, as I didn't know which of the roads was the D48III. So I took the long way round the Lac Noir. This route is not suitable for those who want to walk and look at the scenery, as the stony, steeply uphill path forces you to look at your feet rather than at the forest. The lack of litter bins in the car park is also worth noting.

Walked on 31 October. Very nice route with magnificent views. The paths are often very stony. It was still the school holidays, so there were lots of people on the route.

Lovely route, but unfortunately it was overcast, so I'll have to do it again in fine weather to enjoy the scenery.

Magnificent ride. It was very windy at the Gazon du Faing +/- 1300m altitude and very clear (at the same time, the wind was moderate elsewhere).
We were lucky that it was cool.
