From Lac Noir to Schupferen

This is a lovely walk with no particular difficulties, offering beautiful views of the Val d’Orbey, the Munster Valley and the Vosges ridges.
Winding through woods and stubble fields, the route takes you from lake to lake to the Schupferen farmhouse inn, where you can enjoy a delicious break with the world’s best Fleischnacka!
The welcome is lovely. Booking is essential, as the inn is small.
The return journey is mainly downhill, which is very pleasant after a meal at the farmhouse inn.

Description of the walk

Park in the Lac Noir car park.

(S/E) Set off southwards, crossing the small bridge over the lake’s outlet. Turn right onto the path marked with red and white discs and a Blue Disc, which climbs quite steeply through the forest. Continue along this path, cross a wide track, then carry on until you rejoin the path further up.

(1) Then continue to the left along the path marked with a Red Disc, which climbs gently through the forest until you reach a junction at the edge of the woodland.

(2) Carry on straight ahead along the path marked with a Red Disc through the stubble fields towards Lac du Forlet. “It offers magnificent views of the Alsace plain, the Black Forest and, in good weather, the Alps.”

(3) At the lake, leave the Red Triangle-marked trail, which leads to the farm, and take the Yellow Disc-marked trail to reach the Chalet Erichson.

(4) Continue along the Yellow Disc-marked trail, which descends quite steeply through the pastures towards the Gaertlesrain farm.

(5) Go round the farm and continue down this narrow path, which joins a track suitable for vehicles; follow this track to Lac Vert.

(6) At the far end of the lake, continue along the track towards Seestaettle Farm.

(7) Before you reach the farm, at the first incline, don’t miss the small path marked Blue with a white cross, which climbs quite steeply to the right at the edge of the forest, running alongside a small stream. It then turns left and levels out. Cross a wetland area via wooden footbridges. The path becomes steeper again.
Once you reach the top, carry on straight ahead, leaving a path with a red Saltire sign on your right which leads to the Schupferen Refuge, and join a road suitable for vehicles.

(8) Turn right to go round the back of the reindeer farm and follow the road to the Schupferen farmhouse inn.

(9) Then retrace your steps back to Lac Vert.

(6) Turn right onto the wide path marked ‘Red Disc – Yellow Cross’, which descends into the forest and leads to a Fork in the road.

(10) Keep left onto the path marked ‘Yellow Cross’ and continue downhill for quite a while until you come out onto the Chemin du Forlet.

(11) Turn left onto it, heading towards Grossrunz.

(12) Take care here not to miss the start of the path, which leaves the road to the right and rejoins it a little further up.

(13) Leave the road and continue to the right along a path marked with a Yellow Cross towards the Hautes-Huttes junction.

(14) Following theGR® 532 (Yellow Rectangle), take the path to the left towards Lac Noir. Continue along it for 1.5 km, passing through the former EDF site at Lac Noir, and you’ll reach your car park (S/E).

A beautiful route, but one you have to work for – especially on the way there!
There are hills to climb right from the start, from Lac Noir. But what a treat in terms of scenery and stunning views of the lakes!
An excellent meal at the Auberge du Schupferen – bookings must be made a month in advance.
A very leisurely return journey along wide, easy paths.
A word of advice: make sure you wear suitable footwear and perhaps bring some walking poles!

A lovely walk with stunning scenery. The only downside was at point 13, where the path was blocked by a landowner, forcing us to take a detour through the woods – and it wasn’t easy to find our way back onto the path.

A lovely walk offering magnificent views of the Alps on this clear, dry day. Exploring the three lakes on the way there is superb. The break at the Schupferen farmhouse inn offers views across the whole of the Munster Valley and the Vosges ridges. The return journey through the forest to Lac Noir is also very pleasant. Thank you to the author for this lovely day’s walk.
