The Perdrix Walk in Châtel-Saint-Germain

From the Square du Tagnon, the route climbs towards the schools then joins the Route de Guerre and the ancient Roman road, formerly known as the Chaussée de France. It passes close to Fort Jeanne-d’Arc, skirts the site, then offers an unobstructed view of Metz before crossing the Bois du Reposoir. The descent is via the Chemin de Gravelotte, where you can see a remarkable service tree. The return route follows Rue de Cléry and Rue de Bonne-Fontaine back to the starting point.

Description of the walk

(S/E) From the Square du Tagnon, head left towards the cemetery.

(1) Take Rue de la Bonne Fontaine, then Rue de Cléry and Rue des Chauvaux, keeping straight on until you reach the schools.

(2) Go up Rue du Rebenot on the right, then follow Chemin des Goules until you reach Route de Guerre.

(3) Turn left, then take a path immediately on the right, about 20 metres further on, on a side road off the Route de Guerre.

(4) Walk up to the old Roman road, which was the main route from Metz to Paris until 1700 under the name ‘Chaussée de France’ and now marks the boundary between Rozérieulles and Châtel. Turn left towards Rozérieulles. Continue straight on until you reach the tennis courts. Go round them on the left.

(5) Turn right and continue along Rue du Fort Jeanne d’Arc. Carry on straight ahead along the old Route de Paris – a route dating from the early18th century – until you reach the main entrance to the Fort de Jeanne d’Arc.

(6) At the junction, turn right towards the motocross track and quickly turn left onto the path that goes round the fort. Carry on straight ahead, in the open, with a lovely view of Metz and its surrounding area.

(7) Enter the Bois du Reposoir and carry on straight ahead.

(8) Cross the Route de Guerre. Then head down towards Châtel via the Chemin de Gravelotte. To the left of the track, opposite a path coming from the right, stands a rare tree with twisted bark: a service tree (Sorbus domestica, whose wood was used to make wheel hubs and press screws).

(9) A few dozen metres further on, take the Chemin du Reposoir on the right until you reach Rue de Cléry. Follow it to the left back to the starting point (S/E).
