Park at the Trémouilles car park and look for the signpost for the start of the hikes to the right of the toilets.
(S/E) Take the path on the right towards "Pra de l'Ase - Baie Saint-Michel". The trail runs above the lake, climbing and descending through ravines. Each time, ignore any trails that branch off to the left. After passing two beautiful coves, the trail emerges onto a beach. Continue until you reach a meadow and look for the sign: you are at Pra de l'Ase.
(1) Go straight ahead towards "Baie Saint-Michel". Continue along this path, ignoring any paths that branch off to the left. The path runs alongside the lake and then comes into view of Baie Saint-Michel and leads to a large cove, Baie des Curattes. Stay on the path that climbs up the bay to a crossroads called "Sous les Curattes".
(2) Turn left towards "Chanteloube". Continue along the path, ignoring any turn-offs on the left, until you reach the next crossroads.
At this crossroads at Pra de l'Ase, go straight ahead on the wide path towards "Chanteloube-Belvédère des Curattes". Pass a ruin (the Forest des Michellons) and continue to the next crossroads.
(3) At the Curattes crossroads, continue straight ahead towards "Table d'Orientation du Belvédère des Curattes". The path will wind upwards and then level out on the ridge. Before reaching the viewpoint, look for the mountain bike trail that branches off to the left in the woods. This is the trail you will take after visiting the viewpoint.
At the viewpoint, enjoy the view and the water flowing out: this is La Roche des Écrins! Take the trail back to the mountain bike trail you spotted on the way up.
(4) Descend the trail now on your right, following the mountain biking signs. When you reach a meadow, continue along the trail, ignoring any trails that branch off to the left. You will eventually come out onto a large meadow where you will find the Serre de l'Aigle signpost.
(5) Head towards Chanteloube. The trail runs along the hillside and you can see the village. Continue to the crossroads with a small road.
(6) Take the road on the left that descends through the village. Continue straight ahead until you reach the Chapelle Saint-Jacques.
(7) Follow the paved road that branches off to the left. When you reach the bridge, if you wish, do not cross it but take the dirt track that branches off to the right and head for the small house, which is the former railway station.
(8) Turn left and follow the road you took by car to the Trémouilles car park. As you pass under the bridge, look up to see the old black marks left by locomotive smoke under the archway. Along the way, you can make a round trip to see the Chanteloube viaduct (submerged or not depending on the season) then rejoin the dirt road and continue to the Trémouilles car park (S/E).
