Plateau Saint-Jean

From the Éguilles car park, at the end of the road of the same name, you will descend the Vallon de Challandre and then climb back up to the Plateau Saint-Jean with some beautiful views of the Gorges du Cians and the Tête de Rigaud towering above them.
After a short detour to the Chapelle Saint-Jean chapel, you will cross the plateau with Mont Mounier in your sights.

Description of the walk

Park at the end of Route des Éguilles, in the large car park.

Yellow markings

(S/E) Descend along the road, following the direction of Les Éguilles at marker 17.

(1) At marker 18, continue straight on towards Les Éguilles and descend the Vallon de Challandre, mainly on the right bank at first.
After crossing the stream twice, you will come to a footbridge that marks the start of the climb.
The trail quickly moves away from the stream and arrives at a hill.
Descend on the other side, following the yellow-marked trail, and you will reach an intersection at marker 70a.

(2) Climb up to the left towards the Plateau Saint-Jean. The climb is steep with a few hairpin bends. The slope levels out a little when you reach a ridge.
There are only a few metres left to discover a magnificent panorama behind you with the Gorges du Cians surrounded by the Cluots on one side and the Tête de Rigaud on the other.
Continue following the cairns and a few markings to a small viewpoint, then descend to the right to join a track that leads to a shelter at marker 57.

(3) From marker 57, climb up to the right to the Chapelle Saint-Jean for a different view.

(4) After enjoying the view, return to marker 57.

(3) Turn right towards Les Launes, crossing the Plateau Saint-Jean with Mont Mounier in sight.
Then descend along the track, passing below a cross, to reach a small pass.

No markings

(5) Turn left onto an unmarked path and, when you reach a valley, keep to the left to descend a gully heading west, which will take you back to the Éguilles car park (S/E).

A very beautiful walk that took three hours. No particular difficulties. On the way back after the chapel, we found ourselves walking downhill alongside the ski lift pylons instead of taking a path a little further to the right. But no worries, as we ended up back where we started. Afterwards, we took the Eguilles chairlift (€4.50 return) to have a drink at the mountain restaurant and walk around a small lake. Highly recommended. A leisurely return trip on the chairlift

Magnificent. Completed in early August, starting around 1 p.m. First part: plenty of shade, close to water, pleasant path, beautiful larch trees. Second part (fairly steep but manageable climb): shade, spectacular scenery (rock pillars and ridges) facing a superb forest - one regret: mountain bikes have made the rocky, steep path even worse, and hikers just have to put up with it... Third part: immense views with easy landmarks (at St Jean Bapt.) - Valberg, Mounier, Cians, Pommier. Charming chapel and site. Return: Obvious path if you follow the description carefully, pleasant and pastoral. Done slowly (age... 'not young') in four hours, with pleasure and taking photographs.
Highly recommended - unless you're afraid of the patou... (which wasn't present there).

A very beautiful hike done with the family, including two teenagers aged 11 and 13, who really enjoyed the first part at the bottom of the valley and the passage across the plateau, where there was a herd of magnificent dairy cows in August.
The climb from one to the other is a little steep but not impossible.
The descent via the ski slopes is a bit monotonous but has the advantage of being quick and easy.

We absolutely loved this hike , which we did in winter, wearing snowshoes for half of the route. The landscapes are varied: you start by walking along a charming little valley. Then tall rock formations appear above your head, which you go around to climb through a mysterious mossy forest of fir and pine trees. There are beautiful views of the Cians Gorges before reaching the St-Jean plateau. The descent is very quick and easy via a ski slope.
We recommend this hike in summer (shady) and in winter (easily accessible with snowshoes). Thank you for sharing!

Snowshoe hike with little snow at the start, travelled in an anti-clockwise direction.
The Eguilles car park is easy to find and conveniently located.
We covered 10 km and walked for 4 hours with an elevation gain of 400 m.
A very pleasant hike in the sunshine.
