Les Cluots

This hike, starting from the Gorges du Cians road, takes you up Les Cluots, a mountain located in a steppe area above the red pelite of the Cians.

Set back from the Mercantour massif, the summit offers a superb 360° panorama of the Alpes-Maritimes.

Description of the walk

Park in the large car park on the right-hand side of the road, about 1.5 km after the Gorges du Cians.

(S/E) Follow the road downhill to marker no. 69.

(1) At the marker, turn left towards the Ruines de Giarons and the Abbé to cross the Cians. Climb up the other side of the stream via the yellow-marked trail.

This section climbs quite steeply through the woods with a series of small hairpin bends that are not visible on the map.

At the edge of the woods, you will pass a watering hole and a sheepfold, then the trail climbs up the left side to reach the ruins of Giarons and a small oratory facing Mont-Mounier at marker no. 74.

(2) At the oratory, take the marked trail that climbs immediately to the right at the edge of the woods.

Follow the main marked trail, taking care not to get lost in the tracks left by flocks of sheep. The pass between Tête de Giarons and Tête de Pérail is to the south-southwest.

Pass the first signpost indicating the aforementioned peaks and descend to a second one just below.

(3) Climb straight up towards Les Cluots along the well-marked path. After a long bend to the left, you will reach a pass just before a sheepfold. Turn right to join the tracks of a track before heading due west to reach the summit.

(4) To the north, you can see a large part of the Mercantour with the Haut-Var peaks on the left, Mont-Mounier in the centre and the Vésubie peaks on the right.
Turn back.

(3) Turn right onto the track that climbs gently towards the Baisse de Clari.
The path begins to descend, then becomes quite hilly at a surprising depression on your left. At the next intersection, turn right to reach Baisse de Clari.

(5) Take the left-hand path along the ledge towards Beuil.

(6) At marker no. 62, turn left again to begin the descent towards Le Pommier. The path is barely marked and follows a west-northwest direction. A few wooden posts help you find your way until you enter the forest.

Then follow the yellow-marked path that winds down to Le Pommier (markers 61a and 61b).

(7) Continue straight down the steep descent towards Pré de Chaudi.

(8) At marker 61c, turn right. The descent is gentler and joins a track. Follow this track, ignoring the path that climbs to the left, to reach the banks of the Cians.

Ford the river and climb up the track that leads to the car park and the starting point (S/E).

Apart from a few troughs for livestock, there is no water along the route. However, there are quite a few shepherds' shelters.

Bring at least 1.5 to 2 litres of water per person.

Hike done before the herds were brought up. On the first part, several trees had fallen across the path, forcing us to make a few detours or contortions. Also watch out for processionary caterpillars, as there are quite a few nests in this section too. Otherwise, it was a very beautiful hike, and we were alone in the world! The entire plateau is still covered with a beautiful layer of snow, so a small pair of crampons came in handy, especially on the section leading up to Les Cluots. We'll do it again in the autumn to see the colours of the larch trees.

A beautiful route with magnificent panoramic views of the Cians Gorges. We have added the very easy climb up to the Tête de Pérail, which offers exceptional views of the gorges.
The route can sometimes be difficult to follow, especially at the start of the season when the vegetation has grown back, particularly on the section before reaching the plateau at the foot of the Tête du Giaron and between points 6 and 7.
Thank you for this beautiful route.

A truly beautiful hike, except for the area overrun by herds and therefore dangerous due to the Patous left to their own devices.
We managed to escape from about ten of them at Les Giarons.
Respect for the herds, yes, but also for the hikers.

A magnificent area with a wide variety of landscapes.
We were lucky enough to hear the deer bellowing in the area.
A hike to be repeated at different times of the year.

Beautiful hike mostly through forest, caution required depending on the planned route, marker 124 with three possible directions, including two neighbouring azimuths on the track and path.

It would also be nice to wait until the hike is over before asking what we think of it... I downloaded this hike on 22/07 and it's still 22/07!
