A short walk from Hersin, via the Chemin des Morts de Bracquencourt.

I’ve used part of a longer walk to create this short route, which is mainly on paths. It’s short and easy and, in fine weather, very pleasant.

Description of the walk

Park at Place de la Liberté in Hersin-Coupigny.

(S/E) Cross the square heading south to reach Rue Daquin. Follow it to the right until you come to a footpath.

(1) Turn left here and carry on straight ahead (Rue Florent Évrard) until you reach Rue Victor Hugo. Follow this road for about fifty metres to the right.

(2) Take the second street on the left (Rue Lavoisier), towards the swimming pool. At the roundabout, carry on straight ahead and continue straight on until you reach a T-junction.

(3) Turn left, then immediately right to go through a culvert under the ring road. Ignore a path on the left and continue to a junction.

(4) Turn right onto the wide path. Head towards the ring road before joining a small road.

(5) Follow it for a while on the left until you reach the first house on the right.

(6) Take the grassy path on the right (Chemin des Morts) and follow it straight on until you reach the hamlet of Bracquencourt.

(7) Follow the small road to the right until you reach a Fork in the road. Turn left. 100 metres further on, turn sharply right and follow the good (though sometimes slippery) path through the woodland. You’ll come close to the (very noisy) ring road and walk alongside it as far as the bridge.

(8) Pass under the bridge (unfortunately used by some as a rubbish dump). Keep close to the pillars on the right to find a lovely path. You’ll soon reach Rued’Houdain;crossitand continue straight ahead on the path, which is now excellent and clear (a bridle path). Follow this bridle path and go round a bend to the right to reach a Fork in the road.

(9) Turn left (do not go downhill) and cross a small bridge. Cross over some railway tracks and follow the narrow path which goes round the slag heap and joins a wider track.

(10) Take the old railway line on the right. Pass thefirst junction (staircase) and reach asecond one.

(11) Turn left towards the housing estate. Ignore thefirst street on the right and take thesecond, a pretty little lane that leads onto Rue de Verdrel.

(12) Follow it to the left until you reach the junction. Then take the small street opposite, which very quickly becomes a narrow path running alongside fields. It bends to the right to rejoin the original fork.

(1) Carry on straight ahead to reach Place de la Liberté and the car park (S/E).

A beautiful hike that is easy to follow, even if you do it backwards like we did.
And beautiful scenery all the way to Mont des Flandres.
We'll definitely do it again, but the right way round.
