The departure point is in the centre of the village of Penne. Park in the car parks in front of and around the town hall. Return to the centre of the village and, in particular, in front of the restaurant La Terrasse.
No signposts
(S/E) With your back to the restaurant and slightly to the right, take the alley opposite, between the D9 and the house. At the end of the cul-de-sac, a narrow dirt path lined with grass and nettles begins. Although not very well marked, the path is always visible; it runs almost flat before descending gently towards the road.
(1) Cross the D9 and continue straight ahead. The path is in front of a farm; close the gates after passing through. The path climbs gradually southwards, makes a sharp right turn and, after a left curve, ends in front of La Farge after 200 metres.
(2) In front of La Farge and at this T-junction, turn right and follow the sign for "Église". Pass to the right of the Church of Saint-Paul de Mamiac and its cemetery. At the end of the boundary wall, continue to the right. At the D9, turn left. Pass in front of the tower. Cross the Layrous stream. At the junction with the D87, turn right.
(3) At the crossroads, take the wide white and stony track on the left.
(4) Pass the hay barn on your right. The trail continues behind the barn, climbing slightly before levelling out on the plateau. The trail changes several times, ranging from a narrow path to a wide track, but remains very stony throughout.
(5) Continue straight ahead at the crossroads. The path is not shown on the IGN map but does exist on the ground. After Rozé, it begins to descend gradually towards the D964. The fortress of Bruniquel can be seen in the distance during the descent. At the departmental road, cross and continue on the track opposite.
GR®46red and white markings
(6) Turn right. From this point, the red and whiteGR®46markings will guide you to Penne.
(7) Bridge over the Vère. Turn left to reach the entrance at the foot of Bruniquel.
(8) Ruins of a wash house, spring and amphitheatre. To the right of the wash house, an uphill path allows you to make a round trip to the centre of the village. If you do not wish to do this, turn right to find a leisure area with picnic tables for a lunch break. Then head back up towards the departmental road, turn left onto the D115 and follow it for about 100 metres. At the bridge, join the road to cross the Aveyron. At the end of the road, turn left.
(9) Turn right onto the dirt and gravel path. Here begins a long climb to altitude 272, to the right of Joanny. At the first three forks, go right. Keep heading north to Borie Basse. After this, the path turns northeast. Admire the charming drystone shelter on your right shortly after Borie Basse.
(10) At this fourth fork, go left.
(11) At the crossroads in the large clearing, turn right onto the perpendicular track. This plateau is opposite the one you passed on the way there. Follow this white track marked with red and white signs. At the fork, at Nauc, continue on the same track to the left.
(12) At the fork, leave the white track and take the yellow path on the right. Stay on this path, ignoring any other paths that branch off.
(13) At this crossroads (elevation 277), turn left to rejoin the D33.
(14) At the wooden cross in Garan, turn right. Stay on the departmental road for 150 m. Take the first dirt track on the right. Continue for about 150 m before approaching the road again; do not join it.
(15) Turn right. The red and white markings on a tree on your left are almost completely faded. From this point, a leg-breaking descent begins on a rough track that is more or less hollow. It is steep, long and very technical. It only ends at the road, at the Ermitage.
(16) Turn right. Further on, cross the Aveyron river and then cross the D115 very carefully. Turn left onto the semi-tarmac road. Find a path on the right.
(17) Climb up this dirt path to return to the centre of the village and the town hall car park (S/E).
