Les Suquets de Penne via Fontbonne

Starting from the beautiful village of Penne, which boasts a famous castle, this route takes you through the Grésigne Forest, consisting mainly of oak trees, and its deeply shaded paths, before climbing up to old hamlets such as Roussel and Roussergue. You will then climb the Suquets, the rocky promontory opposite Penne, which offers a panoramic view of the village, literally ‘nestled’ within the forest.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park of the Penne village hall near the town hall.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, take the road on the right towards Prat Fieyral and walk for about 150 m.

Yellow and red GR® de Pays Cordes-Penne markings + yellow markings

(1) Turn right onto the GR® de Pays Cordes-Penne, heading towards Castelnau-de-Montmiral, also signposted ‘Le Cammas’. Climb steadily up a shaded, stony path, heading due south. At Bayès, the path becomes a road and, after a left-hand bend, joins the Pas de la Lignée, where you come out onto the RD87.

(2) Carefully follow this road on the left for about 300 m, then turn left onto the Chemin de Fontbonne. Walk past the Fontbonne refuge and, just after, turn left onto a wooded path leading downhill. This path becomes a track and heads east into the traditional oak forest of La Grésigne before reaching a major crossroads just before La Serre: there is an abandoned lorry nearby.

Yellow markings

(3) Turn left, heading due north, onto a forest track and thus leave the GR® de Pays. Further on, leave the private track towards Caussanilles on your left, as well as any other tracks that may appear on your left. Begin a circular route at Négo Bouc and follow the yellow markings as they wind through the undergrowth heading north. Cross a large pasture via a shaded path heading north-west before reaching Roussel.

(4) Turn left onto the road that crosses the hamlet and head south before climbing north-west after a sharp bend. Further on, cross the Ruisseau de l’Alvaraise before joining the Route de Vaour (D33).

Yellow signposting “Les Suquets”

(5) Cross this road carefully and take the Sentier des Suquets directly opposite, which you’ll join at this point. Further up, you’ll reach the Route de Plantade; continue along it in the same direction until you reach the entrance to Roussergue.

(6) Leave the Route de Plantade and turn right onto Roussergue’s main street, continuing to the church. From there, turn left onto a small grassy path leading downhill. Further on, cross the pretty little bridge over the Bombic before entering Janoye.

(7) Turn left onto the Route du Bombic and, after about 200 m, turn right onto the Sentier des Suquets. This path climbs steeply through a series of bends, approaches the Grotte de la Pyramide and rejoins the GR® de Pays Cordes-Penne.

(8) At this point, turn left to reach Les Suquets:here, enjoy the superb view of Penne nestled in the Grésigne Forest. Continuenorth on the path after the viewpoint.

Yellow and red markings: GR® de Pays Cordes-Penne

At the fork, continue to your left down a fairly gentle, stony path and reach a junction where the route meets the GR®46.

Yellow and red GR® de Pays Cordes-Penne markings + white and red GR®46 markings

(10) Turn left, cross through Amiel and continue to the D115. Cross this roadcarefully to take the path opposite which runs alongside the Aveyron towards Penne. Continue to Granier.

(11) Cross the D115 carefully once more and head up the Route de Vaour (D33) opposite for about 150 m. Once in Granier, cross the bridge over the Ruisseau de Font Bonne to the right and continue along the Route du Roudoulie, which runs parallel to the D115. Pass the old Penne railway station and continue until you approach the village, situated on the hill to your left.

No signposting

(12) Take a small path on your left, which was created a few years ago; this allows you to avoid the more distant Chemin de la Caussade and cross it further up to reach the village square in Penne, just in front of the Church of Sainte-Catherine. Follow Rue du Chaix to the left to reach the junction.

(13) Turn left, then take the right-hand fork at the three-way junction to pass in front of the town hall and reach the car park for the village hall (S/E).

A lovely route I did in early April under cloudy, windy skies. The signs of this winter’s severe weather and gales are still visible: fallen trees blocking the path, and the trail is very muddy in places, making it tricky to navigate. With some lovely climbs, scenic views and quaint little hamlets, I’d definitely recommend it!

Very easy to follow on GPS. Beautiful forest trails, a little bit of tarmac connecting the trails, pretty hamlets to pass through.
I didn't meet anyone on a rainy day, and the view from the Suquets rock must be superb on a clear day.

A pleasant hike, the average level is accurate as there is quite a bit of elevation gain and, especially towards the end of the long descent, the ground is very rocky, so you can't go down too fast. We took the time indicated, stopping for a picnic break.

Hello, nice route, shaded as described, with beautiful views of the valley and the village of Penne from several angles
An old-fashioned bakery (check opening times and order in advance) selling lovely bread rolls to enjoy with some delicious goat's cheese 🐐 available on the main road as you arrive at the bottom of Penne.
I recommend this route.🚶♀️🚶♂️👌

A varied route, with two fairly challenging climbs in the second half and magnificent scenery in the Aveyron valley. Over 80% of the route is shaded.
