Mont de la Guerre via the Champagny cable cars

The proposed route allows you to climb Mont de la Guerre from Champagny-en-Vanoise and descend via the ski area. The route passes by the Champagny cable cars for those who wish to shorten the descent (please note that they are not operational on Saturdays). There are many alternatives for the descent; I have suggested this version to create a loop. Instead of going through the Bois des Génévriers, it is possible to descend via the forest track.

Description of the walk

The start is at the Champagny-En-Vanoise cable cars. There are car parks nearby.

(S/E) Walk north along the road for about 50 metres until you reach the first fork. Leave the road and turn left towards Les Hauts de Planchamp and Le Châletard.

(1) At the intersection (with the return trail), continue straight ahead on the path until you reach Châtelard.

(2) (Drinking water a few metres to the right, towards Champagny.) Take the path on the left towards La Duy (Plan Bas on the IGN map).

(3) At the fork, turn right to continue towards La Duy.

(4) Once you reach the cross at Plan Bas (which is sometimes called La Duy on some maps, but not on IGN maps), continue until you reach the road.

(5) Turn left onto the road towards the hamlet of La Duy and cross it.

(6) Leave the road after the last houses and take the path on the right towards Mont de la Guerre. Keep right at the fork 100 metres further on.

(7) At the Chavonette fork, continue along the track towards Mont de la Guerre. At the next two forks, keep heading towards Mont de la Guerre.

(8) At La Porcière, ignore the path leading back opposite. For a round trip, turn left towards Mont de la Guerre (sign).

(9) At the crossroads, at an altitude of 2,070 metres, turn right towards Mont de la Guerre.

(10) It is possible to make a round trip to the Chapelle du Bozelet. Once at the foot of Mont de la Guerre, take the path indicated by a cairn on the left. (Note: as you go around the mountain, you will find a sign indicating to turn left to climb to the summit, but do not take this path as it is very poorly marked compared to the one suggested.)

(11) Descend via the same route you took on the way up to La Porcière.

(8) Take the path on the left, keep right at the next fork until you reach the Piste des Bozelets and the Chalet des Verdons Sud.

(12) Take the path behind the chalet, which joins a track on the right leading to the cable cars.

(13) Turn right before reaching the cable cars to join the road that leads to the Borseliers chairlift.

(14) When you reach the Borseliers chairlift, take the Piste des Bois at the bottom to the next sign.

(15) At the crossroads, we recommend not completing the descent via the Piste des Bois as it is very exposed to the sun. Instead, turn right to go through the Bois des Génévriers. At the T-junction, turn left and continue to the forest chalet. Please note that some slopes are steep.

(16) Take the path on the right behind the chalet. Join a path on the right.

(17) At the next fork, take the path on the left to follow the Réclard riverbed as closely as possible. Further on, you will come back to the Piste des Bois

(18) Follow it straight ahead to the bridge that crosses the Réclard.

(19) On the other side of the stream, take the track on the right towards La Traye. Further on, at the hairpin bend on the left, follow the path opposite, the one furthest to the left, which leads directly to the intersection you passed at the start of the hike.

(1) Continue straight ahead to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

I also do this route on snowshoes in winter, as the ascent mainly follows the ski touring route and the descent is on the ski area. It is therefore safe. Just be careful when you reach the ski area.

There are many possible variations: passage to La Ravière on the descent, passage via the Bozelets chapel and the Col de la Grande Forcle, which offers a view of the La Plagne ski area and Mont Blanc.

There are several water points along the route but none at the summit.

Worth a visit

The view from the summit of Mont de la Guerre provides a 360° view of the Champagny-en-Vanoise and Pralognan-la-Vanoise ski areas, the Vanoise glaciers (Grande Casse, Dôme de l'Arpont, Granc Bec, etc.), Courchevel and Mont Jovet.
