Monêtier-les-Bains - Vallouise

E10th stage lasting 8 hours, covering 21 km, with 1,000 m of ascent and 1,200 m of descent. A very pleasant stage with no technical difficulty, offering magnificent views of the Barre des Écrins at 4,100 m and the very impressive Pelvoux at 3,900 m.
For the more adventurous, there is the option of taking a detour to climb up to Lac de l’Eychauda by leaving theGR® 54 at the Col de l’Eychauda. The stage ends in the village of Pelvoux, which, despite the fatigue, is well worth a quick visit.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: A 13-day grand tour of the Parc des Ecrins via the GR® 54

Description of the walk

(S) Start from the Lodge le Flourou. Head down towards the stream.

(1) Cross the bridge and head right for a few metres. Take the road on the left that climbs and pass in front of the magnificent Art et Vie chalets. Continue on to reach the car park located after the telecommunications masts.

(2) Continue left along the track, then quickly turn right onto theGR®. Climb through the forest via numerous hairpin bends. You will cross the Sentier Découverte, but keep right on theGR®. Continue the climb to reach the Croix de Cibouit, the arrival and departure point for the ski lifts.

(3) Take theGR® opposite, which runs alongside a wide ski run, and reach the hillside reservoir and the Col de l'Eychauda.

(4) Begin the long and difficult descent, staying on theGR® 54 to the bottom of the valley to reach the junction with the lake trail.

(5) Ignore this path and keep left on theGR® to quickly reach the car park in the hamlet of Chambran.

(6) Continue now along the D421T road and, a few hundred metres further on, reach the junction with a path.

(7) Leave the road and take theGR® again to the right, following the left bank of the Torrent de l'Eychauda. You’ll rejoin the road at a hairpin bend.

(8) Leave theGR® here, turning left onto the road and following it for about 200 metres. At the next bend, leave the main road and follow the path to the right.
Pass the Baume ravine, then the Mardanel ravine to reach the junction withthe PR® leading to the Cabane Chouvet.

(9) Turn right onto the path and emerge onto a track. Then pass the Cabane de l’Adret. Reach another track junction.

(10) Turn left here. At Martouret, the track turns into a lovely path leading to thefirst junction. Continue straight on for a few metres and cross the bed of the Torrent de la Julianne.

(11) Turn right and head downhill. Pass a cross and continue straight on until you reach a track. Leave the track and follow the path that branches off to the left along a ledge, until you reach the Torrent de Paulin.

(12) Cross it and stay on the path furthest to the right to continue descending to thefirst houses in Vallouise. Take the Chemin du Small Pass on the right, then the Chemin de Pra-Peyron on the left. Descend the tarmac road to the D994E

(13) Cross it carefully, passing over the bridge above the Gyr. You will then reach the centre of the village. At the crossroads opposite a beautiful church and a chapel, take the street furthest to the right, Rue de Champ de Ville, and continue straight on through the village and past the magnificent houses restored in the true regional tradition. At a junction, turn right to reach the Stopover Lodge L'Aiglier (E), today’s stopover.

Notes

(S) Departure from the Le Flourou stopover lodge in Monêtier-les-Bains.
(E) Arrival at the l'Aigliére stopover lodge in Vallouise-Pelvoux, where we spent the night. Another night without camping. An excellent lodge, both in terms of the comfort of the accommodation and the quality of the dinner. A superb welcome.
(E) Don’t hesitate to take a stroll through the beautiful village of Vallouise-Pelvoux.

As with all mountain hikes, bring binoculars, a camera, an IGN map and/or a guidebook.
There are plenty of streams, so you won’t have any trouble finding water.
Note: Many herds are guarded by sheepdogs, known as patous. Hikers are therefore strongly advised not to stray from the path. If you encounter a guard dog, remain calm and passive to reassure it.
