Märkt, Rhine and Kander

Park in the car park of the Märkt community hall (municipality of Weil am Rhein) at the Altrheinhalle, Haltingerstrasse: there are around 30 spaces.

(S/E) From the car park, with the community hall on your left, take the footpath on the left and walk between the community hall and the school to reach Teichweg. Turn right. At the end of this street, take a dirt track (barriers) on the left between a playground and a small square. Continue along this path until you reach Ruelle Am Altrhein.

(1) Turn right and cross the main street, Rheinstrasse. Continue straight ahead, passing by the boules court. A marked footpath invites you to walk around the houses at the back (twice on the left) to avoid the main street. Back on the main street, turn right onto the pedestrian walkway to cross the A5 motorway bridge. Continue to the end of the street in the industrial area.

(2) At Rue Im Worth, take the street on the right along the forest to a small car park.

(3) Turn left and cross the car park. The path continues at the end of the car park, slightly to the left. Follow a stream that originates near the nearby sewage treatment plant and flows into the Rhine. When you reach Rheinaueweg, on the banks of the Rhine, turn right and follow the Rhine. Benches scattered here and there and information boards invite you to pause and contemplate. Continue to a crossroads.

(4) This crossroads is close to where the Kander flows into the Rhine. Turn right. A little further on, ignore the path coming from the right, then take the path on the right that passes under the A5 motorway and runs alongside the Kander. Be careful during periods of high water, as this passage under the motorway may be flooded and therefore impassable, in which case you will have to turn back! Stay on this path until you reach the first bridge.

(5) Cross this bridge. Please note that this bridge is used by cars taking the small tarmac road through the fields, which is a shortcut from Märkt to Efringen-Kirchen. Until 31 May 2026, this bridge is closed to traffic for repair work. Continue along the Kander on the other side and admire the fish pass, which since 2020 has replaced several small waterfalls.

(6) At the next bridge, cross the Kander again and turn right towards the gravel pit. Follow it along Märkter Strasse. Cross a small forest. At the end of the street is the western exit of Eimeldingen. Turn right.

(7) Cross the street and take the path immediately on the left that leads to Märkt through the forest. Ignore the paths on either side of the path and head for the village that you can see in the distance. At the entrance to the village, take the first street on the left, Im Winkel.

(8) Go to the end of this street, then turn right. The Altrheinhalle is signposted on the left. Take this road to reach the car park (S/E).

At (4), you can continue straight ahead and head towards the kiosk, where you will find information panels, or towards a beautiful picnic area, a playground and a barbecue area. A little further down, the path leads to the former mouth of the Kander. This was diverted in 2011 as part of a renaturation project and now flows into the Rhine a few hundred metres further on. At this point, you will need to turn back. Please note that during periods of high water, the path to the mouth of the Kander may be submerged and therefore impassable.
