Cambrin and Annequin Marshes

A pleasant walk along quiet roads amidst ponds and marshes. Don’t forget your binoculars and camera. In summer, mosquito repellent will come in handy.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park behind Cambrin Town Hall.

(S/E) Head for the RN41 and cross it at the traffic lights towards the marsh (Rue du Marais).

(1) 400 metres further on, turn right after a house onto the footpath and head towards Rue Pasteur. Turn left onto this street.

(2) In front of the municipal workshops, turn left and take the road on the right at the Y-junction, Rue des Baigneurs. After the ‘Beuvry’ sign, pass Rue Désiré Sénéchal on your left, follow Rue Haute, then turn left onto Rue Chafflaine.

(3) Turn left onto Rue de Gorre and then left again onto Rue Traversaine, running alongside the military canal. Then turn right in front of the Annequin fishing pond and follow Rue Fontaine.

(4) At the end, turn left, then immediately left onto Rue Léon Blum. At the small square, turn left onto Rue Désiré Sénéchal and finally right to join Rue du Marais. 150 metres further on, turn left, staying on this same street, pass the landscaped marshes and enter to walk around them and watch the birds. There are several birdwatching hides. Return to the junction you passed on the way there.

(1) Continue along Rue du Marais, cross the road and head for the car park behind the town hall (S/E).

Notes

The Cambrin marshes are accessible to wheelchair users and blind people. The information boards are in Braille.
There is also a car park which can serve as a starting point for this walk.

On Rue de Gorre, there is also access to the footpath through the Bellenville woods, 1.5 km away.

All the routes described are, on the whole, perfectly suitable for vehicles.

Worth a visit

When you reach the municipal workshops at the end of Rue Pasteur, you can turn right towards Cuinchy, cross the canal bridge and follow the towpath to see the Cuinchy lock before returning by the same route.
However, the main attraction of this walk lies in birdwatching around the ponds and marshes you pass along the way.

I just didn’t spot the sign for Beuvry, but with a sat-nav app open I managed to find the right way.
A lovely walk amongst the ponds and marshes, with the sound of frogs in the background.

The construction of numerous houses has altered the route description
And, most importantly, the marsh observatory for birdwatching is no longer accessible!

A walk that starts in town but very quickly takes you into the tranquillity of the countryside.
You’ll walk alongside the marshes where you can see swans with their cygnets, frogs and even a pond full of water lilies – which, I might add, is particularly idyllic in June.
