The barns and chalets of Furfande

A must-do hike in Queyras! Furfande is only accessible on foot, snowshoes, skis or mountain bike, making it a village isolated from everything, like a small local "Mafate" (but only inhabited in summer and without the helicopters).

Departure from Col de Furfande, the highest point of the hike (2,500 m), accessible by car from mid-June to mid-November.

A shorter version is possible by turning left in Les Granges, towards the "Refuge de Furfande". This halves the distance and time.

Description of the walk

Departure from the Col de Furfande, at an altitude of 2,500 metres, which can be reached via a long, steep forest track from the village of Arvieux at 1,500 metres (signposted in the village). A normal car can make it to the end slowly, an SUV or 4x4 without any problems, but a low-slung car is impossible (it is better to park lower down, at "Gué", but the hike will be about 6 km longer with a 300 m elevation gain).

You can do the hike in either direction, but the right/west route (towards Les Granges de Furfande) offers more beautiful views and, above all, ends at the Refuge de Furfande at the end of the hike (where you can eat if you set off in the morning, or have a drink).

(S/E) From the pass, follow the path downhill towards the south.

(1) At the three-way junction, take the right-hand path towards Les Granges de Furfande (GR® 541) and continue to this hamlet. It is impossible to get lost, as there is only one path to the "village".

(2) Cross the "village" of Granges de Furfande, continuing straight ahead (towards the Col du Lauzet).

(3) Further down in the valley, leave the path that goes right towards the Col du Lauzet (GR®541) and turn left towards Les Chalets de Furfande. Follow this path southwards, then north-eastwards.

(4) Descend to Les Chalets, still on the single path, with a short return trip possible to Lac du Lauzon (emerald colour) in May and June, as the lake disappears afterwards.

(5) Continue up the single trail towards Col de la Lauze and arrive at the viewpoint overlooking the Guil valley 1,200 m below.

(6) Continue north-east and come out at Col de la Lauze.

(7) Turn left (north-west) towards the Refuge de Furfande (do not head towards Queyron).

(8) Stop or leave the refuge on your left and head north towards the Col de Furfande, passing 3-4 chalets (there are many marmots here). The end is the steepest part of the hike. Aim for the cross at the top, symbolising the Col de Furfande.

(1) Turn right to find the pass (S/E).

A peaceful hike in the Furfande mountain pastures, which comprise around a hundred chalets and barns with no roads.

A jewel of the Queyras Park and a fabulous balcony overlooking the Guil Gorges, the mountain pasture is listed as one of the picturesque sites of the Hautes-Alpes.

A feeling of freedom and space, an invitation to breathe. Pure bliss!

But beware, the track that leads up to the pass is... really a track!

A magnificent hike, one of the most beautiful of our week in Queyras.
I can confirm that unless you have a good 4x4, it is difficult to drive up to the pass, or else you don't care about your vehicle!
The drive up to the car park (sign indicating that the road becomes dangerous) is already long, about 35 minutes driving slowly.
Then you have to walk up to the pass, which adds about an hour to the walk described in the guidebook.
In any case, it was a very beautiful hike with stunning scenery and few people in August.

Please note that the elevation gain is underestimated if all ascents and descents are taken into account.

Please note: the starting point at the pass is only accessible by 4x4 or similar vehicle!
Only part of the route can be done with a standard car.
The rest of the track is worse, with more large rocks and more holes than at the start, so I wouldn't attempt it with my car.
You can drive (see photos) to a sign indicating that the track becomes dangerous and park in a large car park.
It will take you 30-35 minutes from Arvieux, driving slowly on the very stony, unpaved track.
From this point, it will take you 1 hour of uphill walking to reach the start of the GPX route described, i.e. the Col de Furfande, and a little less to walk back down.
The hike is lovely, with beautiful views of the mountain pastures. Towards the end, you pass the Furfande refuge, where the hazelnut tart was very good
I'm glad I did this hike, but the access problem is annoying. You'll lose an hour's drive there and back, not to mention the extra walking.
So add well over 1½ to 2 hours to your schedule unless you have a suitable vehicle.

There are so many ways to do this hike that you can come back to it several times! This summer 2021, we went via the Col de Furfande, but on foot, starting from the Plan du Vallon car park. The view to the north or south from the pass and the descent to Les Granges in good weather are among our fondest memories of Queyras. This mountain pasture is a must for hikers. You won't be alone, but there is plenty of space and a variety of trails...

This is one of the most beautiful walks we have done in Queyras many years ago (in 1991).
It is just as enjoyable when starting from Queyron (walk completed in 2000).
