Description of the walk

At the entrance to Arvieux, near the cemetery, take the D502 on the right towards Les Maisons. Park at the entrance to the hamlet of Les Maisons in the designated car park.

(S/E) Walk through the hamlet; at the crossroads by the wash house, keep left and continue to the end of the tarmac road.

(1) Continue along theGR®®5, marked in white and red. Begin an easy climb, with a few hairpin bends, and arrive at a crossroads of tracks.

(2) Keep right on theGR®, head to the southern tip of the lake, then turn left to follow the eastern shore and reach the picnic tables.

(3) Follow the northern shore, then turn left onto the track to return to the junction you passed earlier.

(2) Take the track on the right, which is the Route du Lac de Roue. Follow the almost level path to reach the Serre crossroads.

(4) Leave the track here and turn left, heading downhill and following the Torrent du Pellas. Continue on and, via a series of hairpin bends, join the Route des Maisons at a hairpin bend. Take this to the left to quickly reach the Maisons car park (S/E).

A very pleasant hike with beautiful views during the ascent and a lovely forest. There was snow on the higher ground, the lake was frozen and covered with a thick layer of snow. The descent was more technical due to the presence of ice/black ice on the path. It is best to do a round trip hike using the same path on the way back in winter or to have crampons. There are numerous picnic tables along the route.

We did this walk this winter (around New Year’s Day); there was a bit of snow, so perhaps some of the markings weren’t visible; but the start point is poorly signposted to begin with, as the hamlet of ‘Les Maisons’ isn’t indicated, and the route isn’t marked out clearly enough.Nevertheless, it was a lovely walk on a sunny slope, with picnic tables at the finish for the warmer months. We didn’t see the lake as it was frozen and covered in snow; but it was a pleasant and enjoyable walk, without any difficulty.
