The car park is on the left at Col d'Itzulegi, near a pidgeon hunting hut. During the hunting season (October-November), it is recommended to park 100 m further up on the right, in a grassy area.
(S/E) From the car park, follow the road leading south towards the antennas until you reach a fork.
(1) Ignore the path on the left, which will be the return route, and continue south until you reach the start of a large bend.
(2) Leave the road and head north up the grassy slope to reach the Aitzpitza antenna.
(3) Carefully go around the antenna building and descend northwards to reach the summit of Gorramendi (1071 m).
(4) At the summit, walk around the ruins of the barracks to the east along the Gorramendi plateau, descend a little to the south and climb back up to the north-east to reach the summit of Otanarte and its antenna.
(5) On the plateau, head east to the Otanarte Pass. To the left of the road, climb east-northeast on a stony path and join the paved track to the north.
(6) Follow the track to the left for 50 m to reach the Gorramakil plateau. Follow the track to the left to the summit of the small rocky hill of Gorramakil.
(7) Continue along the plateau following the track and descend along a sometimes steep path to the Burdimotzeko Pass.
(8) Then climb north to the summit of Akomendi and its distinctive bell.
(9) Descend to the Burdimotzeko Pass.
(8) Take a grassy path on the right that descends slightly and enters the forest, heading southwest. Follow this well-marked path to the Otanarteko Erreka stream.
(10) Cross the stream and continue westwards. After crossing two more streams, leave the forest and come out at the Col de l'Olaintzingo Haitza and its sheepfold.
(11) Descend south-west and rejoin the road you took on the way up.
(1) Turn right and follow the road in the opposite direction to the outward route until you reach the car park at the Col d'Itzulegi pidgeon hunting hut (S/E).
, with a stark contrast between the outward journey (ridge line exposed to the wind) and the return journey (gentle descent on the north side, through the woods). Walking time: 3 hours 25 minutes, including a 20-minute lunch break halfway through and without the return trip to the small summit at that point. Most of the effort was on the way there, so the route was well designed. This hike must be even more enjoyable in fine weather on the way back, with the return of vegetation and the crossing of several small streams.
