Antsestegi and Lizartzu from Otxondo

A lovely hike which, despite a reasonable elevation gain, will allow you to admire many of the Basque Country’s key peaks and, on a clear day, offer you a breathtaking view of the coast.

Description of the walk

To reach the starting point, cross the border at Dantxaria and follow the N-121-B to the Otxondo Pass. At the pass, turn left onto the “track” leading towards Gorramendi. After 1.2 km, you will find a small grassy car park on the right.

(S/E) Cross the road and take the track heading north. Leave the track climbing up to your right and, about ten metres further on, look for a path rising to the right. Follow this path, passing an old small military post, and 50 m further on, continue straight ahead, following the ridge path.

(1) At Meatzetako Bizkarra, continue straight ahead.

(2) When you reach a junction, head straight ahead and aim for the rocky summit you will need to climb; the path is clearly visible.

(3) Once at the foot of the summit rocks, look for a large white-painted arrow indicating the correct route. Climb to the summit and descend straight ahead, taking care here of a few holes sometimes hidden by vegetation.

Climb back up, continuing in the same direction, to the summit of Antsestegi, marked by an iron sculpture of an axe (note: someone has stuck a medal marked ‘Lizartzu’ there; ignore this – it is indeed Antsestegi!).
Looking north, spot the three tunnel entrances just below the summit of Lizartzu.

(4) From the summit, make a circular loop to the left to descend towards the west.

(5) Aim for a small, isolated beech copse a little further down and follow the path running above these trees to descend to the pass with pidgeon hunting huts.
Continue straight ahead on the ridge path leading to Burdiako Kaskoa.

(6) Descend straight ahead to a pass.

(7) Take the wide track on the right which leads to the foot of Lizartzu.

(8) Climb up, roughly following my route, which takes you past the three entrances to the military tunnels spotted earlier from Antsestegi, then on to the summit of Lizartzu.

(9) Descend straight down to the track junction; the slope is quite steep. Take the wide track heading left (south) and rejoin the track taken on the way up, following it for about 500 m.

(7) At the junction, continue straight ahead on this wide, easy and obvious track.

(2) At the 714m mark, continue along the track straight ahead for just over a kilometre.

(10) Turn right onto a narrower track to avoid going back down to the road. Follow this track, running parallel to the route taken on the way out, back to the starting point (S/E).

No water source.
On the way back, after descending from Lizartzu, the track runs alongside the forest; there are plenty of shady spots ideal for a break or a picnic.
The military tunnels are filled with mud.

A lovely hike of moderate difficulty (3½ hours) with no particular difficulties, almost identical to another hike we had already done, except for the starting point. We started out in the clouds, which gradually cleared as we hiked. Beautiful views of the mountains and valley, pottoks, donkeys, cows, sheep...

A lovely route along the ridges with 360° views of the northern and southern Basque peaks and the coast.
We did it the other way round this time so we wouldn’t have to walk along the concrete track on the way back.
Very quiet for a beautifully sunny Saturday, apart from a few mountain bikers on the lower sections of the route.

A lovely route, much of which follows the ridges and offers breathtaking views across the entire Basque Coast. The height of the ferns at this time of year sometimes makes the path hard to spot (mainly at point 7). The descent towards Urdax gave us the chance to gather a few chestnuts. And thanks to the innkeeper who agreed to make us a potato omelette at 4 pm!
We’ll have to do this again in winter for better light… without the ferns!

A lovely ridge walk on the way there; the return journey is less glamorous along the track...
If we have time, shall we suggest returning via the same route as the outward journey?
