Description of the walk

Departure from the Eucherts roundabout (shopping area).

(S/E) Go up the road on the left towards the residences, then turn right 200 metres further on.

(1) Turn right to cut through the "Les Cimes Blanches" residential area and join another small tarmac road.

(2) Follow this road uphill. The tarmac ends at the golf clubhouse and the track continues as a dirt track. Follow it towards Roc-Noir.

(3) Stay on the main track to the left.

(4) At the fork, continue along the main track to the left. Stay on this track, which passes under the Roches Noires chairlift and winds its way up several hairpin bends.

(5) Leave the main track momentarily to follow the old military road on the left, which is easily recognisable (stone retaining walls) and leads directly up to the Roc-Noir memorial.

(6) Arrive at the monument and its orientation table. Continue straight ahead and rejoin the main trail after passing the arrival stations of two chairlifts. Pass the Col des Embrasures and continue towards the Col de la Traversette and the Fort de la Redoute Ruinée.

(7) Orientation table and "Pas dans le vide" (Step into the void). From the pass, descend to the right via the path that runs roughly alongside the Fort chairlift towards Combe des Moulins (difficult to find at first due to the earthworks on the ski slopes), or for those with strong legs, straight down the slope following the route of the old ski lift. When you reach the foot of the chairlift, join a long dirt track.

(8) Turn right onto this track, which becomes a tarmac road after about 1 km.

(9) Pass close to Plan de l'Arc, a leisure area, and continue along the road, passing at the foot of the slopes towards your starting point (S/E).

Hike done in August
We did the route backwards, which allowed us to climb up the trail and see the fort. We took the footpath on the way down after the 13BCA memorial, rather than the mountain bike trail, which joins up further down.
A walk with magnificent views at the top, looking out over Mont Blanc and Mont Pourri!
Hike 100% in the sun, no shade, so make sure you take plenty of water

As we were tired, we did the route in reverse, taking the Roches Noires chairlift up the hill. Beautiful view of Mont Blanc from the Col de la Traversette.

I did this hike in August 2020, also in the opposite direction: climbing up from the valley floor with Fort de la Traversette in sight the whole way, it's motivating to see it getting closer and closer. Above, the view is superb, with a particularly clear view of Mont Blanc. Superb! Then, walk along the ridge to descend to the starting point via a hiking trail and then the wide 4x4 tracks. The descent is less interesting in terms of the path, but as you have the great panorama of Les Arcs, Bourg-St-Maurice, and the Tignes dam in the distance, opposite you all along the descent, it makes up for it! In short, I recommend this hike, but also in the opposite direction to the description.

The route is indeed as described. A beautiful hike, but unfortunately the weather was not on our side that day. We will return when the weather is more favourable.

We did it in the opposite direction to the description, which has the advantage of having the wide path on the way back down.
There were superb panoramic views all along the route, especially when we reached the pass.

It's a shame we didn't see Mont Blanc; there were too many clouds.

Disappointing ascent route, far too many wide paths resembling hiking motorways. We are in the heart of the La Rosière ski area, so there are ski slopes and ski lifts as far as the eye can see, which is not very interesting. Don't hesitate to take the new path that branches off to the left just after the last big bend to the right on the main path. It's well marked and, above all, adds a touch of wilderness to this hike. Once you reach the Col des Embrasures, take the main path back to the Col de la Traversette. The views are nice, except that today is the only day of our stay when it's raining and the clouds are spoiling the view a little. Descend on the small path but still within the ski area...
