The Hunters’ Trail (Lac du Retour circular)

A magnificent hike that alternates between shaded forest sections, a balcony trail and a mountain lake.

Description of the walk

The route starts from the village of Le Châtelard. You can park in the village or walk down from La Rosière via the hiking trails. Leave your car there and start the hike from the only crossroads right in the middle of the village.

(S/E) Head south-east along the Route du Vaz and walk past the chalets. When you reach the old school, head towards Le Vaz. Stay on the road, which will become increasingly steep. Walk past a pond and continue straight on.

(1) Cross the bridge over the Torrent des Moulins. Continue up the hill and you will soon reach the hamlet of Le Vaz.

(2) Once you reach the pond, take the path on your right towards La Roche and Bec Rouge. Follow a forest track.

(3) Ignore the path branching off to the right and continue along the forest track.

(4) At another junction, take the path on your left and climb through the forest towards La Roche.

(5) Follow the path past the back of the chalet; the climb through the forest becomes steep. Continue towards Bec Rouge.

(6) The edge of the forest is approaching. At the junction, take the path on the left and exit the forest. Continue your ascent.

(7) Take the path on the left, heading towards Lac du Retour. Follow a balcony path.

(8) Turn left (north) and head for the Passage du Retour.

(9) Turn right and descend to Lac du Retour.

(10) Retrace your steps back to the Passage du Retour.

(9) Continue westwards towards Plan Pigeux and descend via numerous hairpin bends (caution: steep sections).

(11) At Plan Pigeux (basin), continue the descent along the path on the left. Cross the mountain pastures and enjoy the view of Mont Pourri. Enter the forest.

(12) Ignore a path coming from the right and continue descending through the forest towards Le Vaz.

(2) Take the path back the way you came to return to Le Châtelard (S/E).

A beautiful, varied hike, with a few people on some sections. Very pretty view of the lake. The return trip was indeed a bit tough on the knees in the first part.
On the way up, the path between markers 8 and 10 was directly accessible as shown on the IGN map.

Beautiful route. Lovely scenery when you reach the lake. Quite busy at the lake due to the arrival of hikers who set off from Les Eucherts in La Rosière.

An ideal climb through the forest, followed by a very pleasant walk through lush green countryside. However, the start of the descent is very steep and rocky – not recommended for those with bad knees...
