The two Rheinfelden, the Rhine Island and the hydroelectric power station

A walk along the banks of the Rhine, close to the water’s edge and across the river. It runs from Germany to Switzerland via a bridge and an island, and from Switzerland to Germany via the Rheinfelden dam. There are numerous vantage points along the way, including a section through the old town of Rheinfelden (CH).

Description of the walk

Car parks in Rheinfelden are pay-and-display (approx. €1.50/hour). See practical information. Park at Rheinfelden station (60 spaces).

(S/E) With your back to the railway line, cross the car park to the right and join the “Rheinliebe Fussweg” footpath, which you should follow to the left and then along the Rhine to the old road bridge, the Alte Rheinbrücke. Cross part of it.

(1) Take the path on the right to visit the small Inseli island in Burgstell and walk around it. Cross the bridge again on the right to reach Rheinfelden in Switzerland.

(2) Leave the Rheinliebe Fussweg and take Marktgasse on the left, with its many shops, restaurants and the Rathaus (town hall). Continue straight on along Kupfergasse and pass through the Storchennestturm gate. Go straight on to the Stadtpark.

(3) Take Rheinweg on the left and follow the signposted path. Walk along the Rhine, past the Park-Hotel and then through residential areas. Continue to follow the signposted path. At the end of the residential areas, enter the forest, then keep left and arrive at a fork.

(4) Leave the marked trail, which heads left towards the banks of the Rhine and the hydroelectric power station, and continue straight on the marked trail towards Rheinfelden and Möhlin. Pass a viewpoint overlooking the power station, walk past the Schwartzerweg shelter, then continue to the Riburg Saltworks.

(5) Take the Erdbeeriweg on the left just before the railway line. Keep left and take a tarmac road (Chleigrütstrasse) on the left towards the hydroelectric power station. Stay on this tarmac road and go through a tunnel (approx. 70 metres). You will emerge at the power station; turn left then right before the car park and cross the dam.

(6) Take the signposted path on the left along the Rhine. Pass the exhibition pavilion of the old power station, Sternenplatz and over the Dürrenbach river. Continue straight on to Adelbergstrasse.

(7) Leave the signposted path and continue straight on along Adelbergstrasse. There are several viewing points along the road. At the end of Adelbergstrasse, take the path leading off to the right towards St James’s Chapel.

(8) Turn left along the railway tracks and over the road to reach the station car park (S/E).
