Car parks in Rheinfelden are pay-and-display (approx. €1.50/hour). See practical information. Park at Rheinfelden station (60 spaces).
(S/E) With your back to the railway line, cross the car park to the right and join the “Rheinliebe Fussweg” footpath, which you should follow to the left and then along the Rhine to the old road bridge, the Alte Rheinbrücke. Cross part of it.
(1) Turn right to visit the small Inseli island and Burgstell, and walk around them. Cross the bridge again to the right to reach Rheinfelden in Switzerland.
(2) Leave the Rheinliebe Fussweg and turn left onto Marktgasse with its many shops, restaurants and the Rathaus (town hall). Continue straight on along Kupfergasse and pass through the Storchennestturm gate. Go straight on to the Stadtpark.
(3) Turn left onto Rheinweg and follow the signposted path. Walk along the Rhine, past the Park-Hotel and then through residential areas. Continue to follow the signposted path. At the end of the residential areas, enter the forest, keep left and arrive at a fork in the path.
(4) Leave the signposted path which heads left towards the banks of the Rhine and the hydroelectric power station, and continue straight on along the signposted path towards Rheinfelden Möhlin. Pass a viewpoint overlooking the power station, walk past the Schwartzerweg shelter, then continue to the Riburg Saltworks.
(5) Turn left just before the railway line onto Erdbeeriweg. Keep left and turn left again onto a tarmac road (cycle path) towards the hydroelectric power station. Stay on this tarmac path and go through a tunnel (approx. 50 metres). You’ll emerge at the power station; turn left then right and cross the dam.
(6) Turn left and follow the signposted path along the Rhine. Pass the exhibition pavilion of the old power station, Sternenplatz, and over the Dürrenbach river. Continue straight on to Adelbergstrasse.
(7) Leave the marked path and continue straight on along Adelbergstrasse. There are several viewing points along the road. At the end of Adelbergstrasse, take the path leading off to the right towards St James’s Chapel.
(8) Turn left along the railway tracks and over the road to reach the station car park (S/E).
