Wasserschloss and Erstelweg starting from Inzlingen

A pleasant little stroll through Inzlingen, going round the castle and then up towards the Eiserne Hand with a snack break in the shelter of the Buttenberg. Return via the Erstelweg and the sports facilities on the heights of Inzlingen.

Description of the walk

(S/E) From the car park, head towards the castle (Wasserschloss).

(1) Walk around it.

(1) Return to the main road, Riehenstrasse. Cross the road carefully and take Dorfstrasse straight ahead. Turn right then left into the street "Im Winkel". Go to the end of the street. Next to house no. 2 on the left, there is a pedestrian crossing leading to Gartenweg. Take this on the right. 50 metres further on, there are steps (with a handrail) on the left. After this first flight of steps, take a slight detour first right then left to take the second flight of steps and reach Rue Auf der Neusetze. Continue to the right to the end of the street, then take Buttenbergweg to the left. Ignore the path on the right. You will come to a Y-junction.

(2) Leave the small road and take the grassy path on the left. There are lovely views of Saint-Louis and Basel along this section of the path. At the next Y-junction, which is barely visible, turn right. The path rejoins the small road.

(3) Follow the road uphill to the right. Pass by farm buildings and a pen of pygmy goats. Ignore the paths on either side and stay on the clearly visible track. Further on, walk alongside the forest and reach a T-junction.

(4) Take the track on the right to reach the Buttenberg shelter, located 150 metres further on to the right.

(5) Retrace your steps.

(4) Continue to the right into the forest. Stay on the path marked with a Yellow Diamond, ignoring the paths on either side, until you reach the “Eiserne Hand” junction.

(6) Take the first path on the left, the Erstelweg, which leads back down towards Inzlingen. Stay on this wide path straight ahead until you reach the Inzlingen sports facilities, then the play area for toddlers (Waldkindergarten) on the right and a picnic area on the left. Enter Inzlingen via Waldstrasse, following it to the end.

(7) At the Y-junction, turn left up Sonnhalde. Follow this road to the end and continue along Dorfstrasse to the church. Take the road on the right towards the church.

(8) Go round it on the left, join Kirchstrasse, then take the pedestrian crossing on the right to reach the main road, Riehenstrasse. Cross it carefully, climb the small embankment and head left towards the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul. Open during the day. Surprising.

The moated castle (Wasserschloss) houses the town hall and a restaurant. Beautiful grounds. A ‘path of the planets’ starts at the far end of the castle grounds. Allow 2 km for the ‘path of the planets’ route, returning to the castle.
