Departure from the station car park (paid): Bahnhofplatz 79618 Rheinfelden.
(S/E) Head towards the river opposite the station. Cross Basler Strasse and turn left onto Therese Herzog Weg. Head towards the banks of the Rhine to pass by the terrace of the pizzeria, which offers a beautiful view of the old bridge from the viewpoint of the strange Luginsbühl sculpture. Walk back up towards the bridge entrance, admiring the beautiful statue of Saint Anne the Mermaid by artist Roland Kistner on your right, then turn left opposite.
(1) Take the Weinbergstrasse cul-de-sac to reach Adelbergpark, which offers beautiful views of the other bank. Lined with statues and benches, the path winds its way up through an unusual vineyard.
(2) Head back down to the right between the trees towards Möhlin. You will pass the house of artist Roland Kistner, whose sculptures adorn the path. Cross the stream and continue on the right bank along the industrial area. As you approach the hydroelectric dam, stop at the "Pavillon Krafwerk" and then on the viewing platforms to admire the fish passes and the "Gwild", a remarkable feature formed by rock benches, gravel and limestone formations.
(3) Take the bridge over the dam of the power station, Europe's first hydroelectric power station. On the Swiss bank, turn left, leave the tunnel on your right and continue along the bank to climb into the forest via the path on the right. This quickly leads to the edge of the forest near imposing pyramids of wood chips.
(4) Turn left onto Grossgrütweg. After 400 m, a sign points you towards some Roman ruins, a quiet and peaceful spot. Resume the path and after 50 m, turn right, still at the edge of the forest, then right again at the first path across the fields to return to Grossgrütweg. Take it to the left at the edge of the forest, towards the Riburg saltworks, whose two old wooden drilling towers are visible.
(5) Turn right towards the industrial area. Walk alongside a quarry on your right. On your left, two enormous domes protect the salt reserves. Turn right along the quarry and then immediately left to join Erdbertweg.
(6) Just before the railway line, take the Schwarzerweg, which enters the forest. Pass a shelter. Further on, at the Wanderweg sign, turn right towards a viewpoint with a remarkable view of the Rhine.
(7) Then rejoin the Schwarzerweg and continue towards Rheinfelden via Rhenana, staying close to the riverbank. Pass a large park, some luxury hotels and then the large Stadtpark, which you can either walk around or through until you reach the main entrance on Herman Keller Strasse.
(8) Turn right towards the large medieval tower known as the Storchennestturm (Stork's Nest Tower), the gateway to the old town, and walk down Markgasse with its frescoed façades. Stop halfway at the Town Hall (Rathaus) at No. 16.
(9) Don't miss the inner courtyard (with beautiful frescoes).
Back on the street, walk about 20 metres back. Just before a brasserie opposite the large square tower, take a narrow passageway (Schellmengässli) which leads to a small square, Im Rumpel. Admire the Carillon and its legendary goat, saviour of the city, which crosses the "ramparts" at 9am, 12pm, 3pm and 5pm to the accompaniment of music.
Return to the Town Hall.
(8) Continue to the end of the street, where you will see the famous Alte Rheinbrücke bridge on your right, decorated with statues and flags.
(10) The bridge is divided into two parts by the wooded island, the Inseli, which you can reach via stairs on the left for a picturesque round trip.
Back on the German side, you can return to the car park via Therese Herzog Weg, which you used on the way there, or continue straight ahead on the pavement on the right after the bridge, along Rheinbrückstrasse, heading towards the tunnel under the railway line. Just before the tunnel, go up the ramp on the right and cross the bridge to descend towards the station and the car park (S/E).
