The Crussol ledges at Saint-Péray

A pleasant little walk around the Crussol site. First, a balcony path on the Guilherand-Granges side with views of the Rhône Valley, the Vercors, the Diois and beyond, then on the return journey a balcony path on the Ruisseau du Miallan side with views of the Ardèche, Saint-Péray and its vineyards.
A word of advice: download the GPX track – there are a multitude of paths branching off on both sides along the route.

Description of the walk

Starting from the square by Saint-Péray station, the start of the walk is in built-up areas; be sure to use the pedestrian crossings.

(S/E) Follow the railway line due south, towards the village of Guilherand. Pass in front of the Rémy Nodin wine cellar, then, after the Beylesse roundabout, past the greengrocer’s, go past the Fruitcoop buildings and continue southwards.

(1) About a hundred metres past the gate leading to the quays and the Fruitcoop car park, turn left between the two vineyards, following the fence of the first one, towards the railway line. At the foot of the railway embankment, head south until you reach Avenue Georges Clemenceau. Follow it to the right, then turn right again onto Avenue de Lyon. Cross at the pedestrian crossing, walk up the avenue heading north, and after about a hundred metres you’ll find the L’Arma passage on the left.

(2) Take this path, which winds through gardens and vineyards, to emerge onto Rue des Fourniers. Turn right onto the steeply ascending street and continue until you reach a cross. Turn right towards the water tower on Chemin des Gardes. The climb is quite steep but not very long. Pass a ruined barn to reach a plateau planted with vines, the Plateau des Gardes.

(3) After the last vineyard, the track becomes a path and winds along the hillside, with occasional short but steep climbs (take care in wet weather, as it can be very slippery). Always keep to the paths on the right and never return to the small tarmac road of the Val d’Enfer. After crossing a low wall with a set of steps, follow the flat path to the left which leads to the marl deposits above the Val d’Enfer. Follow a path carved into the marl to the right and join a gently ascending track leading to a section through rocky boulders.

(4) Climb over the boulders to reach a platform. Turn left onto the wide path, then take the road to the right for about a hundred metres. At the Les Enfers signpost, turn right heading due north towards the Crussol ridges. Follow theGR® 42, which climbs steeply through the holm oaks. After passing a small quarry on the left, you’ll reach a flat area facing the large quarry.

(5) Take the small path that heads off to the left then immediately turns right. The path descends into the quarry. On a short descent, turn right towards the second high platform of the quarry and head towards the far left. Pass in front of an old quarrymen’s house, of which a few remains are still visible, and keep to the paths on the right. After several ascents and descents, you’ll find yourself in front of another quarry (worth a quick look; there are also some quarrymen’s remains here).

(6) Head slightly to the left. After about 200 to 300 m, you’ll find a path leading down from the ridge. Follow it to the first hairpin bend; do not turn left but go straight on. This path winds along the hillside, sometimes ascending, sometimes descending. A little further on, you will come to a second path descending from the ridge; follow it and also head right under the holm oaks until you reach a third path descending from the ridges.

(7) Follow it to the left (caution: fairly steep descent). Walk past the Top Secret climbing site to reach a platform with a picnic table. Turn slightly right onto the path which leads to a signpost on the main trail. Turn right, walk for about 150 m, then continue left onto a wider path until you reach a hairpin bend below the Auberge de Crussol.

(8) Head left up the stairs then take the path towards Château de Beauregard. In front of the entrance to the château, turn right, walk past the château and then through the park to reach Avenue Asso. Turn right and at the roundabout, cross Avenue du 8 Mai and then the Ruisseau du Miallan.

(9) Turn right onto Quai du Docteur Bouvat towards the railway line, walk for about 300 metres and turn left to return to the station square (S/E).

Worth a visit

After (5), follow the GPX track which will lead you to a water reservoir (water collected by capillary action from the limestone cliffs, which was used by the quarrymen).
As at (6), there are still a few remains to discover in the old quarry (water basin, unfinished fountain basin, remains of quarrymen’s shelters).
On the descent after (7), the Top Secret quarry, used for beginner’s climbing lessons.

For michel.bellednger: The walk has nothing to do with the landslide; we take the path south of the reservoirs, near the church in the village of Guilherand (Chemin des Gardes).
I don’t see where PEYRIN found the landslide sign – could you please give me more details?

A major rockslide occurred about ten years ago, and I think it’s best to avoid this route in winter and during bad weather.

We weren’t able to go on this hike because, when we got there, there was a sign warning of a significant risk of rockfall. A bit of a let-down.

I have nothing to add to the various opinions I share.

This route is rated as moderately difficult. Please note that there are some fairly tricky sections with steep, stony descents, and a difficult section around the corner of the large quarry (an alternative route is available by heading down into the quarry).
The start of the path along the railway line for 200m between points 1 and 2 is impassable (tall grass, brambles).
Tip: do not turn off at the vineyards, but continue for 200–300m along the road (watch out for traffic!), then take the path on the left, join the railway line, and follow the well-maintained path to the houses.
The route offers magnificent views of the Rhône Valley and the Vercors.
Follow the signposts carefully after point 5 as there are many paths. This second part of the route is very pleasant in the shade of the holm oaks.

A lovely route which isn’t quite as good as the marked GR trail, but makes for an interesting alternative if you fancy a change.
