The ruins of Crussol Castle

This fairly short walk allows you to visit the ruins of Crussol Castle, but also to gain a vantage point overlooking the Rhône Valley and Valence – the very reason the castle was built, to monitor and control the movement of people and goods through the valley.

Description of the walk

There is a car park at the start of this walk, accessible from Avenue Asso via Chemin de Beauregard.

(S/E) Leave the car park via the wide path leading uphill, passing through a few grassy areas which, depending on the season, may or may not be in bloom with wild and protected orchids.

(1) At the open-air theatre, continue along the path leading up towards the castle ruins; you’ll start to make your way through some ruins and up a few flights of steps, continuing to climb until you reach a sort of tower that’s still in good condition.

(2) Inside, enjoy the view through the tower’s openings, then head back down initially via the same path you took on the way up; at the bottom of the steps, turn left to follow the ridge.

(3) Shortly after the highest point, leave the ridge and take a path that descends into the forest; the path is quite steep. Pass by a small climbing spot, still on a fairly steep slope, then the path levels out and leads back to the car park (S/E).
