Description of the walk

In the village of Cabasse, park in the large car park on Rue Jules Ferry (D13), which leads to Lac de Carcès and the village of Carcès.

(S/E) From the car park, head towards Rue Jules Ferry (D13), turn left towards the village centre.

(1) At the intersection, turn right onto Route du Vallon. Follow it straight ahead, taking the long bend and leaving the road that branches off to the left just before it. Climb up Fon des Romarins until you reach the intersection that marks the end of the paved road.

(2) Take the track that climbs up to the right. Continue straight ahead until you reach two pylons and a memorial to the Resistance, which has been vandalised. From here, there is a magnificent view of Cabasse, giving you a glimpse of the route of the hike. Leave the track and take the path that descends slightly to the left.

At elevation 341, note the Oppidum and a cistern, with a beautiful view of the woods on the right. Continue along the path until you reach the first intersection and turn right.
Continue to the intersection at elevation 295. Be careful not to take the path that descends to the left before reaching the elevation (not marked on the map).

(3) Take the path on the right in the undergrowth (numerous cairns). Continue downhill to the high-voltage power line. Follow it for a few metres to the right, then turn onto the path that descends steeply to the left: beautiful view, especially of the solar panel park. After this fairly steep descent, you will come to an intersection marked by a ruin.

(4) Take the path on the right that runs alongside a vineyard and the right bank of the Issole, until you reach the D13 departmental road. Cross the bridge on the left and, after crossing, continue for a few metres to the right until you reach a path that descends to the right towards the bed of the Issole. On the road, you will see the remains of the bauxite quarry.

Follow this beautiful path to a private gate with the river on your right and the cliff on your left.

(5) Leave the path and take the trail on the left that climbs steeply through the woods towards the cliff (this trail is not shown on the IGN map). You will arrive at the Trou des Fées, which is actually a troglodyte dwelling (see history below).

User comment: 2 December 2024:

It is no longer possible to access the Grotte des Fées as there is no longer a ladder.

A climber's ladder has been put in place, but we were unable to climb it. About 100 metres from this dwelling, in the thicket on the left, there is a narrow cave that can be explored for a few metres.
After exploring these caves,
continue climbing until you reach a new intersection; behind you, there are magnificent views of the cliff and the valley.

(6) Turn into the path that climbs steeply to the left to reach a magnificent viewpoint with a white metal cross and an esplanade with the Virgin and Child. You are at the site of Notre-Dame du Glaive. To the right of the chapel is the Pont Neuf dolmen (history below). Walk around the site (a wonderful place for a picnic).

After returning to the chapel, take the path that descends steeply, following the oratories along the way. At the bottom of this path, you will arrive at a place called Saint-Loup. Turn right onto the paved road, pass a beautiful chapel and continue downhill to a crossroads.

(7) Turn right onto this small road until you reach another crossroads, crossing the vineyard and passing in front of Château Réquier (vineyard).

(8) Cross the road and take the path that climbs up opposite (not very visible). The path ends at the edge of a meadow. Follow it on the left, continuing to climb. When you reach a road, turn right. After a double bend and about 100 metres, take a path on the left that passes through the scrubland and comes out alongside a vineyard. Follow it uphill until you reach a beautiful wide track and follow the track downhill on the left.

(9) After passing some houses, take the path on the right which descends and then climbs through a wood. Ignore the paths which branch off to the left. All along this path, there are numerous terraces which evoke a rich agricultural past. You will arrive at the Gastée dolmen on your left, a very well-preserved site (see below for historical information). Continue along the path for a few metres and, at the crossroads, take the path on the right that climbs slightly. Pass the gate of a private property on your left and continue straight ahead along this wide path. Shortly after the 336 metre mark, ignore the path that branches off to the right and continue to a new intersection at the 326 metre mark.

(10) Take the hairpin bend onto the path that descends steeply to the right through the woods.

(11) At a new intersection, take the path that descends to the left through the woods. Please note that this path is not shown on the IGN map. Follow it to the village of Cabasse. At the road, cross the bridge on the right over the Issole to reach the town centre and the car park where you started (S/E).

Worth a visit

Historical information taken from several websites

The Trou des Fées and Notre-Dame du Glaive are inaccessible: no ladder.

Le Trou des Fées is a vast cave in the cliff overlooking the Saint-Loup plain with the village of Cabasse in the distance. This troglodyte dwelling served as a hideout and granary for the inhabitants during times of unrest. The defensive walls can still be seen.

Perched at a height of 300 metres, the Notre-Dame du Glaive chapel is built on the edge of a cliff on a hill covered with holm oaks. The site offers splendid views of the Issole gorges and the surrounding mountains (Maures, Bessillons, Mont Aurélien, Sainte Victoire). To the west, it overlooks the Trou aux Fées. An impressive serenity reigns here, no doubt due to the legend behind the sanctuary.

The current sanctuary dates from 1621. A fresco adorns the main façade. It depicts a haloed Virgin Mary holding a bouquet of flowers, with doves at her feet. In front of the chapel stands a calvary and a pietà (Mary holding her dead son in her arms). On the western side of the apse, a second fresco depicts a cross and a rosary.
Legend has it that on Easter Monday in the year 760, the inhabitants of Cabasse were attacked by the Saracens. A battle ensued at the foot of the hill, in the plain of Saint-Loup. The inhabitants of Cabasse implored the Virgin Mary to grant them victory. She appeared above the battle, armed with a sword, and put the invaders to flight. Victorious, the inhabitants of Cabasse built a chapel dedicated to Mary on the very spot where she appeared and, since then, have organised a pilgrimage there every Easter Monday.

Near the chapel, in the open air, there is an altar and a stone pulpit. A few benches are arranged in a semicircle facing it.

On the west side is the dolmen known as the Pont Neuf, which is 3 metres long and dates from the Chalcolithic-Early Bronze Age (2000-1900 BC). It was originally located on another hill but had to be moved due to bauxite quarrying. Excavated by Georges Bérard, it was reconstructed near the chapel, respecting its original orientation. It contained the burnt remains of five individuals and a bronze arrowhead.

Located in the Bouissière forest, the Gastée dolmen stands in the centre of a 16-metre-diameter tumulus under oak and pine trees. It is one of the most beautiful burial sites of the Neolithic peoples of the region. It was restored by Georges Bérard.

The Gastée Dolmen

The dolmen consists of a capstone, four vertical slabs and a low dry stone wall. The capstone has lost a third of its surface area and must have originally weighed over 5 tonnes. The very imposing headstone is located to the east and serves as the main pillar.
The square burial chamber (cella) is divided in the middle by a small vertical slab running north-south. Like the group of dolmens known as the "Var dolmens", the cella is located at a lower level, flush with the ground. The entrance consists of a corridor lined with vertical slabs. It faces west, towards the setting sun or death.
The materials used to build the dolmen were taken from the surrounding area.
During excavations, 30 kg of human bones and 1,600 teeth were collected, corresponding to nearly 80 individuals.
The Gastée dolmen dates from the Chalcolithic period, between 2100 and 2000 BC.

After heavy rain, the descent to Issole from the cistern is very muddy (logging debris) and requires caution.

A pleasant hike, lots of ups and downs, a setting that's a bit different from the surrounding vineyards and olive groves (which we never tire of either)

Hello,
I went on this hike for the second time and enjoyed it just as much as the first time... There are lots of interesting places to (re)discover.
The magnificent Issole river was flowing freely... The Gastée chapel has been adorned with a new statue...
We only met one other hiker...
A very pleasant hike overlooking the village of Cabasse.
Thanks to the author.

Nice hike. A few minor clarifications

- At the start, it's not Rue du Vallon but Chemin du Vallon.
- At the end of 4, don't go through the first private gate shortly after arriving on the trail, but keep walking until you reach thesecond gate.
- At number 5, we didn't see a ladder to climb up to the fairy hole.
- At number 7, we didn't pass the vineyards but we did arrive at Château Requier.
Number 8 was difficult to find.

Very beautiful hike. Avoid when the ground is wet, as it is slippery.

A beautiful route with sections through woodland, a lovely climb up the side of a cliff (but not dangerous) and magnificent views.
You may need to use GPS at times as the paths can be difficult to find or follow. Avoid in wet weather as the ground becomes very slippery.

A beautiful trail with lovely views, easy to follow. Just a heads up for those prone to vertigo: a section of the trail after the fairy hole, covering a few hundred metres, is quite challenging.
Thank you for this very pleasant hike, we had a great time.

A very pleasant hike thanks to the variety of landscapes. The view from the heights and the view of the cliffs are truly beautiful. The three historical sites are very interesting. As I wasn't in great shape, I split the hike into three parts, which I completed over three days. The Visorando map was very helpful in adapting the return journey. Only the first part, which I stopped at the bridge over the Issole, forced me to return by the paved road (I tried to go back up the bank of the Issole but it wasn't possible). The following week, I did the whole hike in one go and was once again amazed by the scenery! I think I'll do it again and never get tired of it! Thank you to the Visorandonneur who published it.

Variety of landscapes and attractions. Accompanied by the scents of spring and birdsong. A real pleasure to hike
There is a difficult section just before the fairy hole, which is a very steep and slippery slope (20 metres long).

This hike is easy and has historical interest, adding an extra dimension to the experience.
The cliff was quite busy, so I preferred to follow the stream.
The village of Cabasse is magnificent. Best enjoyed outside of tourist season, it's a real treat.

A lovely, varied hike. Before climbing up to the cliff, we turned left for a round trip to a very pretty waterfall (lots of water after this rainy period). The climb up to the Trou des Fées and Notre Dame du Glaive is a bit challenging. Luckily we had GPS to find the small paths.
Thank you for suggesting this hike!
