From Thoronet Abbey to Sainte-Suzanne Lake or Carcès

This route takes you from the Cistercian Abbey of Thoronet to Lac de Carcès via trails through a typical Var forest with holm oaks, kermes oaks and rosemary. Along the way, you can see the red bauxite soil and enjoy views overlooking Lac de Carcès and the vineyards. There is an alternative route down to the lake where you can take a break at the open-air café.

Description of the walk

Thoronet Abbey car park.

(S/E) Head towards the back of the car park after the kiosk and cross the wooden bridge over the Bouillidoux stream. Cross the picnic area, then turn left and climb the steps to the side of the road.

(1) Immediately take the track on the right until you reach the fork.

(2) Follow the left-hand track called La Barboussière, climbing alongside the fence of a quarry until you reach a dirt esplanade.

(3) Take the wide track on the right (possible activities related to the quarry). Ignore the tracks on the right or left, but note the red earth laden with bauxite in some places. Its extraction was an important mining activity in the region. Join the D79.

(4) Cross it carefully and take the track that climbs up opposite. When you reach the cistern, continue on the right and pass by a ruined building. You will come to a fork.

(5) Turn left and follow the main track, ignoring the paths on either side. You will come to a multiple crossroads.

(6) Make a quick left/right turn to take a small track going straight up into the forest, indicated by the sign "Retour Village" (Return to Village). Continue straight ahead with a clear view of the lake from the heights . Turn right with the main path and arrive at a crossroads at a cistern on the right-hand side.

(7) Take the small path on the right, following the sign for "Circular Tour Pierrefeu": views of the vineyard. Return to the previous fork.

(6) Turn left to take the reverse route of the outward journey to the D79.
There is a possible alternative/extension towards the lake (see Practical Information).

(4) Turn left onto the lake and walk carefully along its edge for about 300 metres.

(8) After a slight left turn, take a path on the right lined with rosemary.

(9) At the fountain (non-potable water), descend to the left along a very stony path to arrive above the Thoronet Abbey car park.

(10) Use the stone steps on the right to descend to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Wide, unshaded paths between points (1) and (3).
(4) Caution: crossing the D79 on the way there and back, walk along the busy road to (8).

Worth a visit

(6) Option to extend the walk to Lac de Carcès (+ 5.5 km round trip). To do so, turn right towards "Pierrefeu Guinguette" and follow the Rigodoux trail, which descends to the lake shore and offers beautiful views. Follow the road on the left for about 300 m to reach the Lac Guinguette: caution, very busy road, walk along the wooden barrier!
Lac Sainte-Suzanne, known as Lac de Carcès.

A decent hike, but not a must-do.
The start, from point (1) to point (4), is on a wide dirt track often used by lorries, which detracts somewhat from the charm of this first section. The rest of the route is more pleasant: you enter a beautiful, shady Var forest with more natural and peaceful paths.

There is only one real viewpoint over Lake Carcès, but there is no space to sit down and fully enjoy the panorama. The same applies to the view over the vineyards, which is pretty but brief.

We didn't take the alternative route down to the lake, but in hindsight, it may be more interesting than the circular route from point 6 suggested in the Visorando itinerary. It adds about 3 km to the hike, but apparently allows access to the banks and the guinguette for a more pleasant break.

Making a circular route for this route is not really interesting because the outward journey takes you along tracks with uninspiring scenery (quarry, waste disposal site). The return journey is much more pleasant.

I don't find it interesting to hike on wide trails where there is very little shade. I look for hikes on paths that can only be walked on foot and that pass through the forest.

Three-quarters of the route is on forest firebreaks, which are not particularly interesting.
1/4 on single track.
300 m section on the road!
Some nice views. It's a shame the lake is dry at the moment.
Points ofinterest:

  • connects two iconic sites (the abbey and the lake),
  • parking is perfect.

Beautiful hike, but the alternative route down to Lake Carces requires a round trip because the return route is a private road that is poorly maintained.

A wide, uninteresting track from points 1 to 4, then crossing the road near the noisy and dusty waste disposal site, then another wide path where only the tracks of wild boars distracted us.
The circular route from 6 to 7 in the forest is really nice.
Then again from point 4 to 8, 300 metres of winding road where vehicles drive fast, and then another nice stretch of forest until the return.
Done in autumn, the lake was dry.

Lovely walk, only drawback being the section near the green waste treatment facility! Noise and dust for a few hundred metres!

The section between 1 and 6 at the start allows you to walk along a wide track. The path between 8 and 10 is nicer, narrower, and offers some views in the distance. I would recommend taking the alternative route at point 6 to go down to the lake, which we regretted not doing. A peaceful hike.

Thank you for this new route starting from the Thoronet car park, very well described, with a beautiful view of Lake Ste Suzanne. The descent that passes through this viewpoint is particularly steep and stony: good footwear is essential.
