Description of the walk

South of Carcès, on the D562, turn left onto a small road, the Chemin des Riaux (red signs). Ignore a small road on the left, then another on the right, and continue towards Les Riaux for just over 1 km to reach a car park at the junction of several paths (the Visorando app can also help you find the starting point).

(S/E) At the car park, turn immediately right onto the Serre Long forest track, which climbs steeply westwards then north-westwards and passes under a power line.

(1) Turn left onto the tarmac road, which is also theGR® 653A (one of the Camino de Santiago routes). At the water tower, continue straight ahead, then leave the road to follow the forest track from the water tower.

(2) After the CCS5 fire tank, turn left onto the track that climbs. Then, shortly afterwards, turn left again, leave theGR® and follow the Chapelle Saint-Vincent forest track (it climbs very steeply) to the junction with the path to the chapel.

(3) Turn left to visit the chapel and the viewpoints, as well as the remains of the oppidum. Retrace your steps.

(3) Continue along the track to the left, which stays on the ridge with views on both sides. Pass under the high-voltage power line twice. Take care on the steep descent along the very stony path. Pass a path on your right.

(4) Turn right, passing the CCS4 fire tank (which is on the left). Continue along the forest track which will take you back to the car park (S/E).

Waypoints

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 201 m - Car park at the junction of several paths
  2. 1 : km 1.16 - alt. 183 m - Turn left onto the GR.
  3. 2 : km 3.1 - alt. 290 m - Turn left after the CCS5 fire hydrant
  4. 3 : km 3.62 - alt. 369 m - Return trip to the chapel
  5. 4 : km 6.31 - alt. 226 m - CCS4 reservoir, on the right
  6. S/E : km 6.94 - alt. 201 m - Car park at the junction of several paths

Notes

Large car park but a single-lane road leading to it.

Some sections of the path are steep and stony both uphill and downhill.

No water points along the route.

Check the access authorisation for the forest areas on the Var Prefecture website from 20 June to 21 September due to fire risks:

Worth a visit

The Saint-Vincent Chapel is open only on 6 May each year during the pilgrimage by the inhabitants of the village of Vins, commemorating the one made nearly 300 years ago to implore Saint-Vincent to bring rain during a particularly severe drought.

There is a superb view of Lake Carcès if you take the road back towards Le Thoronet. (If you have arrived from Carcès, continue along the road leading to the hiking car park; at the next junction, turn left and after 1 km the view opens up).

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

Very rocky, steep route with nothing to see except the chapel with its door closed.

Some interesting views of the northern part of the hill, from Montfort to Cotignac during the climb and then at the chapel, towards the south. You can also see the telephone relay station, which flashes day and night and can be seen from far away. The most observant visitors will notice the ruins of the feudal castle of Sts Suzanne below the chapel, overlooking VINS sue Caramy, a castle that rivals the Cathar castles!
Access to the chapel is no longer specified. Turn left at the start of the ramp.
To avoid starting out on this small, fairly busy road where it is sometimes impossible to pass (reversing is necessary on some sections), it is best to approach from the end of Lake Carcès, where the roads are wider. This is a slight detour from Carcès, but driving along the lake is so pleasant!

The main attraction lies in the views along the climb. As a side note, the GR route between points 1 and 2 follows the route of the Way of St James between Menton and Arles. A logo is stuck on a signpost.
The route is also used by mountain bikers;

A disappointing walk, with nothing of interest apart from a lovely view on the way down from the chapel. This walk didn’t really inspire us; there are prettier ones in the Var

A pleasant walk through lush vegetation and beautiful countryside. The Saint-Vincent Chapel is a great spot to stop for a break and enjoy the sweeping views.
At the start, be sure to take the small track furthest to the right.
The access road, which is very narrow and has poor visibility, is perhaps the main difficulty of the route!

A lovely walk offering a beautiful view from the chapel...
Note that the Chemin des Riaux (red sign) is located a good kilometre from Carcès towards Brignoles; it’s on a large left-hand bend. Then follow a narrow road for about a kilometre to reach the small car park.
To start the walk, take the path up to the right of the sign... the return route follows the track to the left of the sign
