An easy hike that offers beautiful views and a succession of prehistoric remains.
The Atxuria circular with return via Zugarramurdi
Atxuria or Peña Plata is a beautiful peak with 100-metre cliffs on its southern face. Magnificent views of the Spanish mountains and the northern plains. There are numerous caves at its base. The most famous are those of Sare and Zugarramurdi, which were inhabited in the Palaeolithic era.
Mendibil ascent via Col d'Ibaineta from Col d'Urbia
A beautiful hike that in a short space of time will give you a 360° view of the Basque Country, all the way to the Landes coast on a clear day.
The flora and fauna will not leave you indifferent.
The tour of Atxuria via the Venta Loretxoa
Several hikers have reported that the path after the Zugarramurdi caves is now blocked. I have modified the route (July 2023). From the centre, take the road that leads to the cemetery.
A superb hike that avoids the climb to the summit, which can be exhausting and difficult to find.I have already posted this hike on Visorando. You will walk along the magnificent and impressive cliffs of Atxuria. On this southern side, the hike, with less elevation gain and a few hundred metres more, becomes bucolic.
The chain above Zugarramudi
Anglet Accueille hike (guide Richard)
The mountain range south of Zugarramurdi offers modest peaks in terms of altitude but with interesting panoramic views. Today's hike, which is new, invites you to make short ascents of five of them: Mendibil, Airagarri, Atxuria, Aizparaz and Arleun.
The Atxuria from the Col d'Urbia via the Col des Trois Bornes
A climb up to Atxuria (or Peña Plata), which is not the classic route from the Caves of Sare. You’ll walk along some very beautiful paths, discover prehistoric remains, follow the borderline with a few boundary stones, and often find yourself in the middle of the forest.

A ridge route above the town of Bera, taking you from the Col de Lizuniaga, on the French-Spanish border, to Bera.
The Haute Route des Pyrénées is not yet very high at this point.
Ascent to La Rhune from the station at Col de Saint-Ignace
From the Rhune mini-train station, this hike climbs to the summit at 905 metres. The trail crosses moors, pastures and small woods, offering progressive views of the Basque Coast and the Pyrenees. Along the way, pottoks and mountain birds punctuate the ascent. At the summit, the 360° panorama reveals the ocean on one side and the Pyrenean mountain range on the other, rewarding your efforts with a spectacular natural spectacle.
From the summit of La Rhune to Sare
After reaching the summit of La Rhune via the little train (a lovely climb), we head back down towards the village of Sare. A lovely stretch through the woodland, occasionally passing horses roaming freely.
From Ascain to Hendaye
A lovely stage with a seaside feel and the end of the journey in sight.
In the footsteps of the old Ascain-Sare tramway
Did you know that a tramway used to run through the hinterland from the coast (Hendaye, Ciboure) to Sare via Ascain? That was before the car became popular in 1936. This hike takes you along its route, based on available archives. The landscape has preserved the memory of this journey, which you can discover during this excursion under the watchful eye of Mont Esnaur.
Gartzin and the pidgeon hunting huts
Following paths through pidgeon hunting huts to climb up to the Gartzin blockhouse. A route starting from the Col d'Ibardin on easily accessible paths. The route can be shortened at the point near the pidgeon hunting huts
New coastal path from Socoa to Hendaye
The old coastal path along the Basque coastline from Ciboure to Hendaye is permanently closed to pedestrians due to coastal erosion and numerous landslides.A new path, further inland, has been temporarily proposed by the Pyrénées-Atlantiques Department. This is the route described here.
