Le Tertre de Montécot to Le Teilleul

A small hill in the Mortainais region can be explored from Le Teilleul via a unique path, an ancient pilgrimage route once used by pilgrims coming from Burgundy. From the top of this hill, the view stretches towards Domfront and Mortain.

Description of the walk

The entire route is signposted in yellow: “Autour de Le Teilleul”

(S/E) Opposite the church, turn right and continue right along Rue de l’Église. In front of the town hall, turn left into Rue de Beauregard. Continue right round the hairpin bend into Rue du Tertre, then left into Rue du Champ de Bas.

(1) Continue along the footpath that runs on from the street. Head due north until you reach the cemetery.

(2) Follow the departmental road on the right for 200 m. Turn right, towards the hamlet of Les Yvets. Follow Route de Barenton to approach Beausoleil.

(3) At the bend, leave the road and carry on straight ahead along the footpath. At the crossroads, after crossing the Ruisseau de la Francière, turn immediately left and follow the footpath to La Foresterie. Walk a few dozen metres along the road.

(4) Turn right before the house and walk along the edge of the woods. You’ll come to a crossroads.

(5) Take the path on the right as it climbs. Reach the other edge of the woodland and keep to the right. Ignore the path on the left which leads to La Nerrerie. Continue along the same path which, after a bend to the right, descends to a road. Please note that this descent may present some difficulties as the path is very stony

(6) Follow the RD134 to the right, then take the hairpin bend to the left onto the Route de la Havardière. Pass the houses at La Ruaudière on your right, then those at Moulin de Haute Roue on your left, followed by a lake.

(7) Before the woods, take the gravel path on the right. Enter the valley and cross the stream. Ignore a path on the left and, when the track makes a sharp turn to the left, carry on straight ahead to join another track.

(8) Head straight on, towards the water tower and the pylon. Continue along the Rue du Champ des Fourches, which leads to La Rastière. In front of the houses, turn right and, at the end of the road, take the path on the left. Reach Le Teilleul via the Chemin des Vieilles Haies.

(9) At the crossroads, carry on straight ahead along Rue du Douet Vert. At the end of the street, turn left and then, shortly afterwards, turn right onto Rue de Bretagne, which leads back to the church forecourt (S/E).

Great route, well signposted except for one place where you have to cross a property between hens. Great walk in an exceptional autumn setting.
