Description of the walk

There are a few parking spaces in front of the town hall.

Yellow signposting

(S/E) With the town hall on your left, turn left onto Rue des Charrières. On the right-hand side, there is a protected footpath. At the junction, turn right and, a few metres further on, turn right before the fence. This path avoids walking alongside the road. At the end of the path, cross the D907 with care and walk alongside the Beausoleil buildings on your right.
See details in the “Practical Information” section. Continue straight ahead along the path. Follow it as it curves to the left and you’ll reach the Route des Taillis.

(1) Turn right and follow the D883 to the Butte crossroads. Continue left onto the Route de Grille-Souris.

(2) After Les Roberdières, leave the departmental road and turn left at the junction. Pass the Fontaine Poterie, then Le Haut du Bois. The road becomes a path as it enters the forest. Follow it to reach the Route de la Fosse Arthour.

(3) Ignore the bridge on the left leading to the inn; walk alongside the Sonce and ignore the path on the right, which will be the return route. Follow the road uphill to the footbridge.

(4) Take the footbridge on the left and walk alongside the Étang de la Fosse Arthour on your right. The path widens as it runs alongside the Sonce and ends at the Route du Gué Saffray. Follow it straight on for about a hundred metres.

(5) Turn right onto the path and follow it as it climbs gently to a Fork in the road, where theGR® continues straight on.

Unmarked

(6) . Turn sharply left and continue along the ridge. You’ll rejoin the Route du Gué Saffray (D134).

(7) Cross with care and follow the path to the right of the barrier. Continue due east.

(8) Keep to the right. Caution: the descent to the banks of the pond is steep and dangerous.

At the bottom, turn right to cross the footbridge again.

(4) Continue along the road to the right and take the path on the left. The climb is steep.

(9) Walk past the Calvaire du Roc and continue along the path. You’ll reach a road and continue along it.

(10) Cross the Route de Grille-Souris and carry on straight ahead. The path runs in a straight line.

Yellow markings

(11) TheGR® veers to the left. Carry on straight ahead.

(12) At the Fork in the road, near La Bastille, turn right and join the D217. Follow it for a few hundred metres before turning left at a junction.

(13) Take the path on the right and join the D907. Follow it to the right with care for 100 m, then turn onto the path on the left.

(14) See information under ‘Practical Information’. At the fork in the paths, continue straight ahead. Follow the path as it curves to the left and you’ll reach Rue du Jajolet. Turn right. Walk past the cemetery, then turn right to reach the town hall (S/E).

Notes

The western section follows, almost entirely, route no. 3675738, which starts at the inn’s car park. Here we have combined the two routes suggested in the “Pays de Domfront” walking guide.

Please note that two sections may be impassable if there has been heavy rain in the preceding days, as the route crosses a marshy area.
- The first is between Beausoleil and Les Rues; either cut across the fields, if the lack of crops allows, or return to the Charrières crossroads, head towards La Guéroude and follow the D883 to the right to reach Les Rues.
- The second is located after leaving the Route de Mortain (D907); if, after the Fork in the road, the path on the right is flooded, take the one on the left, which may also have a short difficult section. After the bridge, continue to the right; at the end of the path, turn right again and then, following the curve of the path, rejoin the route.

This route can therefore be divided into two parts:
- thefirst, ‘Between Land and Marsh’, comprises the western circular route: from (3), follow the (8) straight away
- thesecond section, starting from the inn’s car park, joins the (2) to complete the eastern circular route and continues straight on to rejoin the (3) and the inn.

Worth a visit

La Fosse Arthour

Note: The walk between Les Rues and Le Haut du Bois, a distance of 2 km, is along a road with little traffic.

A lovely, very pleasant walk.
However, we had to take an alternative route through the Rouellé marshes as the planned path was impassable due to flooding.

Perhaps if it had been sunny, we would have enjoyed it more. But apart from the rocks, the rest is nothing special.

A very enjoyable and interesting route, technical in places; a good level of fitness is required.
However, there are still plenty of branches lying across the paths, which can make the walk a little less pleasant.
There are some very damp and muddy sections at this time of year, at the start and end of the route when setting off from the village.
